New skin (attempt)

Ok, I'm really REALLY getting sick of what we have now, I keep noticing a lot of errors on the current skin + I'm getting bored of it.

So, we need something new, that's for sure!

Before I get to the skin I made now, let me give you a few details, because the task isn't so simple as it might seem.

1, The skin has to be relatively simple, I won't have time to make something complicated and apply it to all the 17 different cars. (+ I want a simple skin for clean look, but that's personal preference)
2, The skin can't have complicated shapes, because you will not be able to change the color easily. If you ctrl+click a layer, and fill it with the gradient tool, you will loose quality. The ideal way to do that would be to use an Anti Aliasing technique, but that requires a bit of PS skills, and takes a lot of time as well. Of course you could change colors for example with adjusting hue/saturation or the color blanace. However it will be also slow to get the colors you want right + you will never get the same colors for 2 different parts precisely, as you would get it by using the gradient tool to fill a selection with a fixed color.

So bear that in mind before making skin suggestions.

This is what I came up with:




Only the black part of the skin (bottom of car + stripe) would remain fix. The thin part, currently in red, and the upper part of the car, white, would be customizable.

I made it deliberately simple, for the above mentioned reasons.

What I think is also an advantage with this one, is that you will be more easily recognizable. 1/2 the car would be in your color, rather than just a thin stripe that you only recignize, when you are too close.

Yes I know it simple, yes I know its a bit "standard" with a stripe in the middle, but I personally like this simplicity.

So, let me know what you guys think about it. Suggestions are welcome, and requested as well sort of.

If noone likes it I'll try something else obviously.

My original idea behind the small number is that you won't see big number anyway during racing, as you don't have time to exam all the competitor cars while racing down a corner. But in a screenshot/edit small number is perfectly recognizable as well.

Anyway, big number doesn't look too bad either.

The red stripes are a stroke blending effect on the black paint layers. To change them, click each stroke effect for each black layer, and simply change the color. This applies to the Gear Logo as well. The white part is the basic paint layer on the bottom, covering all the skin file, so that's easy to change.

Hit T, click on numbers to rewrite them. Hit T, click on the Team Finalgear text layers, and change the color of the text simply.

edit: The final PSD, if we decide to use this, will have only a few layers so it will be real quick job to change colors. I just piosted the psd i work with now if someone wants to test it.

Oh, and the missing font is also in that folder I gave the link to.

Peter, thats PERFECT. I want have a blue car with the FG skin, and that would fit the bill. Plus, this way we can identify each other easier...kinda, sorta.

If i had any suggestions it would be, a thinner stroke on the URL on the back bumper, its a bit thick at the moment, and perhaps split that big strip over the top into 2 ford GT type strips, just to make it less plain (but the shapes are still simple).

BTW, your older skin is greatt also, because EVERYONE recognizes it. You want an example of over the top, see Team SKH. Your designs are straight to point, simple yet bold.

GraemeH the problem with 2 stripes is that its a pain in the ass to match, and on some cars like fox, fo8, it will look very odd.

edit: the http link, I changed that to simple white text.

How about making that sunshade strip on the front have some text, so we can have our name/liscence plates text on there?

Imagine a track full of us all with these different colours. We'll look like a 200mph bowl of mixed fruit.

I left the shade part "plain" on purpose, because the text gets distorted in a really nasty way there.

With the olds skins it wasn't so noticable because of the text effect, but with this it really sucked.

I like the simplistic design, the only problem would be to incorporate what I want.
