Default Abu Dhabi to host F1 Grand Prix in 2009

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -Oil-rich United Arab Emirates will host a Formula One Grand Prix from 2009 in its capital Abu Dhabi.

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone announced the seven-year deal Saturday.

"Abu Dhabi's hospitality, the genuine warmth of its people and ever increasing number of world class facilities, will ensure that its round of the FIA Formula One World Championship is a wonderful addition to the Formula One calendar,'' Ecclestone said. He made his remarks at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Formula One Festival.

The Abu Dhabi track, which is currently under construction, will be located on Yas Island on the east coast and near the city's airport.

The 5.6-kilometer (3.48-mile) race track will feature three sections including high speed areas, a street section and a marina area, said Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Affairs Authority.

Are they going to drop another race for this one?
The circuit should be amazing, the UAE just don't do common things. images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

although I am interested in this track, I rather see great tracks like Suzuka come back. Ecclestone is ruining the traditional picture of F1 with these tracks...

I agree, I want the old circuits back. Put F1 on the Nordschleife images/smilies/smile.gif

He's moving everything to the east and the great european track are falling out.
I'm afraid F1 won't be as good in a couple of years! images/smilies/sad.gif

I'm glad Spa is back this year, great track!

I've got nothing against the new events - provided we don't lose classic circuits like Spa, Silverstone, Monza etc. I'm still hurting from the loss of Suzuka, and thinking further back the old Hockenheim.

So I don't mind new events - I wouldn't be sad to see the Hungaroring gone in favour of an event at a new, interesting & challenging circuit for instance.

Last season the Hungarian GP was the best of the lot....it was just an insane race and muchos fun to watch. granted the rain was very much a factor in that but to give it up? why? If it provides proper entertainment it should stay and that should be the benchmark, not how tight the 3rd corner is or how long the straights are.

no, Bernie is doing that so he can get even more money!!

and yes, the hungarian GP was one of the best (if not 'the') last season. but in all the other races it's held in it's history, it's been boring as hell!!

Last year's race had nothing whatsoever to do with the track - it was the changing weather conditions that created such a great race. Hungaroring needs to go.

New tracks are great and all, but the classics shouldn't have to suffer non racing seasons cos of them

I really like the Monza style curve, and the tricky two turns, might be an exciting part of the race

Looks pretty Mickey Mouse actually. Still, if it delivers decent racing, then who am I to complain?

Looks like a gun... images/smilies/lol.gif

I don't like killing the old circuits in benefit of this new ones. Exceptions made to the Hungaroring and Imola perhaps. Btw, I really hate Imola... especially the Tamburello, if you get me.

I think imola's a magnificent track... if they sort out the crappy corners, like the new taburello and villeneuve.... and the stupid stupid stupid alteration to the high chicane.

Completely agree with you there.

And I also agree with others that Hungboraring needs to go, get rid of it and bring back Austria A1 images/smilies/wink.gif

I agree. I am not sure about the scale of the circuit diagram, but that 4,5,6 complex before the first hairpin, seems rather out of place consider their is a hairpin immediately following it. Depending on how wide the course is through there, it could be a really fun over taking section where a car needs to get a good run out of 2 and 3 to prepare for 4,5,6 and then the hairpin, or it could be a single-file-line after 2 then images/smilies/zzz.gif . 1, 8 and 11 are the other obvious overtaking spots, and there are some fast sweeps, nothing like the pre-2002 130R, but what is.(other than Eau Rouge)

But hey, its new venue for the circus to go to. At least the first race I guarantee will be fun to watch.
