This is our fearless forum leader from pirate4x4.com, Lance, navagating for Pistol Pete's #2 Trophy truck. They're race was ended early unfortunatly, ending up on boulder trying to chase down Robby Gordon about 200 miles in. Crash doesn't look too bad till you watch the navigator's head and remember they are wearing 5-point harnesses and neck restraints. They ended up with 2 flat tires,a broken rim and a wasted steering rack and pinion. the upper lefthand corner of the GPS shows the the current speed. 113 max IIRC

I have never really thought about this event before but now I am fascinated. What a simply mental event.

I was watching the video and for some reason I thought it might be whole stage, then realised.....hang on 500 miles!!!! That must take them forever. To do it in 9 hours 10 minutes is hammering!!!! And to win by only 7 seconds!!!

Got any specs on those trucks?? I assume 5/6/7 litre V8's? 4 spd manualised autos? RWD or 4x4? Robbie's car sounds like its manual though. Just watched his testing video, my god that thing has horsepower.

I would love to do some off road racing, something a bit different. Maybe not 10 hours of it though!!

Specs on the trucks vary from company to company, But the are all based on production pick-up trucks. the body must match the engine manufacturer but other then that anything goes really. all are full tube chassis, small block (6.5L?) around 400 cubic inch V-8s with 750-800 BHP, Manual Valve body autos usually 3 speeds, 4wd with Indepedent front suspension and solid rear axles. most have 20-26 inches of wheel travel in the front and 26-30 inches in the rear. They sure are pricey though $250,000 and up Robbie Gordon's probably upwords of a million. The Baja 500 is kinda just a pre-run for the Baja 1000 which happens in November. the 1000 usually takes 17-18 hours to run. As for the race its self there is classes from these montsters right down to VW Beetle (Hence the baja bug) and dirt bikes too

Picture of the truck going off the redbull jump near the begginng of the video

*edit- forgot to mention Lance and Pistol Pete were out of the 500 early last year too after flipping the truck, going over a small cliff and landing upside down in the pacific ocean. so I think this year was a smoother ride. I'll see if I can dig up that video.

Well that team hasn't had much luck at Baja then. Were they in last year's 1000, are are they going to be in this year's?

The Baja events must be among the coolest motorsports events on the planet. A true oldschool point-to-point marathon.

Yes they have run the 1000 the last 2 years I believe and will be running again this year. Right after they fix the truck and work on their communication images/smilies/lol.gif
