Former World Series by Renault racer Jaap van Lagen will join the World Touring Car Championship this season in a Lada.

The Dutchman has raced touring cars before and won the European Renault Megane Trophy in 2006. He will drive for Russian Bears Motorsport from the third round of the season at Valencia.

The team entered the WTCC rounds at Zandvoort and Valencia last season with three BMWs, but will homologate a race version of the Lada 110 with the FIA this year.

Van Lagen will be joined at the team by 43-year-old Russian Viktor Shapovalov, who raced for Lada in the Russian Touring Car Championship last season.

Russian Bears Motorsport team manager Maxim Maksimenko said: "We are an independent team, but we've received some parts and technical support from Lada, and their technicians are supporting us with the documents for the homologation."

The team will be run out of a workshop in Franeker, Holland and hope to make their WTCC debut in the official test at Valencia on April 15-16.

Lada was going for a factory entry a few years ago but that never materialized. I wonder if these cars are leftovers from that particular project...

I also wonder whether this is going any further than it did back then, but we'll see. I wouldn't mind if they actually made it, more variety would do WTCC good.
