It's official. The Indy Pro Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in 2007 has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the closest margin of victory in a car race.
The 67-lap, 100-mile race was decided by 0.0005 of a second. Logan Gomez edged Sam Schmidt Motorsports teammate Alex Lloyd by 1.65 inches as they crossed the finish line at 190 mph on the 1.52-mile oval. "It's a great honor to be recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records," said Gomez, a Crown Point, Ind., native who will return for his second season in the Indy Pro Series with Guthrie Racing in 2008. "I was happy just to get my first win at Chicagoland, but if you're going set a world record, I can't think of any better way than to win a race, even if it's by a very slim margin." ![]() That is seriously close ![]()

Did they do it on purpose (since they're teammates)? Or was it just crazy close?

Jesus, I didn't even know they measured that small. Viper007Bond guy, there is no way they could have finished that close on purpose! Also, in competitive motorsport team mates can sometimes be your worst enemy, they compete against eachother the same way they would against someone from another team! Unless the Indy car rules are different, in which I would look like much the idiot for the above statement

I think there was a closer finish in the 2006 RoC. If I remember correctly, Ekstrom beat Kovalainen by 0.0002 of a second.

OK, so this is the one considered official, in a competitive event which counted for a championship. Sounds reasonable.

That's very cool. And they're team mates and all! I suppose with modern timing equipment there will be no such thing as a dead-heat anymore... That's kind of a shame, really.
Anyway, It reminded me of the race at Bathurst in 1977 when Ford took 1 and 2 side-by-side:

This is the only video I could find on Youtube of the win, and unfortunately it's not TV footage, the cameraman doesn't keep up with the cars as they cross the line, and you have to sit through (or wind through) a huge interview with Logan Gomen which is the main portion of the video. But there's no reason not to link it.
Just don't say I didn't warn you that it's not a great video. And it doesn't allow embedding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ_42SEHbvY |

This reminds me of the 1959 Daytona 500. It was close enough that they needed three days to settle it, but of course that was before the idea of a proper photo-finish.
