    Black Women's Hair

    OK, this may be a heavy subject but I wanted to get some thoughts from non-black people.

    Have you ever thought about the hair of black women? I tend to because I'm a black male.

    The majority of the black women I have seen and know perm their hair to make it straight. I often wonder why. I have some ideas but I want your thoughts.

    Black people normally do not have straight hair yet black women strive to have it. Some haven't seem the natural texture of their hair since they were 4-5 years old. This disappoints me because to me it says they are ashamed to be naturally themselves. I don't know of any other race that does the same of such a large scale.

    I've asked black women in the past why to do they perm their hair. They usually just say because this like the way it looks and they do not lie "nappy" hair. But "nappy" is natural for black people.

    I have known of black males who hate it when a black woman has an afro, twists, or locs (i.e. natural styles). I'm sure this doesn't help much either. Me, I love the natural styles. I prefer the natural styles.

    What's your thoughts?

    I have thought about the same thing... It's not positive when all the black female celebs stribe to have straight hair. Sends out bad messages to young people...

    Afro/curls can be nice to, but I guess they tend to think it's more feminine with straight hair since they can do more things with it...

    Well, I'm no hair expert.

    Yeah, it's interesting isn't it? To me, it has a lot to do with what the mainstream considers to be the standard of beauty.

    I really don't think so... I reckon that black hair you are referring to is the more fizzy one? I really like that... But then we live in times where 8 year old girls are concerned about their weight and want to look anorexic or something, so hair is a minor issue, IMO...

    Well, many textures can be considered "nappy" not just frizzy. Mostly refers to the natural hair of a black person that looks like your typical afro. I can find pics if you like.

    But trust me when I say that there is an issue. These girls hate their natural hair. A lot have been perming there hair since they 5 years old. There is a stigma amongst some black people that if your hair is nappy then it's not "good hair." Have you ever a black person say "He has good hair"?

    Well, I dated a black girl briefly and she had her hair straightened... She said it looked better and was much easier / nicer to maintain. I didn't think anymore about it really.

    That's cool. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that straightened hair is a bad thing. People have a choice to wear their hair however they please.

    However, as mentioned above, there is a stigma amongst some black people about having nappy hair. Also, as I mentioned black women are the only women on Earth that go through this much trouble to get their hair to look like another race's hair.

    In the US back in the early 1900s many black women started straightening their hair so that there would one less thing they would be discriminated against for. This behavior was passed down for generations to the point that their natural became something to be ashamed about.

    I like straight black hair better myself, so I guess I helph propagate the practice.

    All ethnicities conform in some way though. You don't see black girls baking themselves under tanning beds.

    I just did a quick count on my "view posts since last visit" list:
