That's not J-POP. It's Japanese Pop ... but it's not J-POP.

Isn't jpop just short for Japanese pop music? Sorry, I've always seen it used that way.

nope. J-pop is actually an electronic music genre that developed in the Japanese pop scene ... it's featured a lot of times as a theme song for anime series, but not necessarily. Characterized by very fast pace, drums that seem to be all over the place and people talking as if you hit the "fast-forward" button on your player. It's quite similar to EuroBeat, if you ever heard it. In fact, it's where EuroBeat came from. All these Anime shows started coming on the market with these J-Pop themes, and of course, those shows were dubbed in English for western audiences, and they tried to dub the theme songs as well. Of course, that was a fail, because you can't translate rhymes. And EuroBeat started as westerners began to make songs like that of their own and affix them to the theme track on anime shows. After that, it grew into the music market as a distinct genre of its own.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, try here http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/, It's under "house" ... and you can find examples of Eurobeat there too.

I recognize far too many of those songs.

That's an interesting definition of Jpop. The usage I've seen is closer to the Wikipedia's definition though.

J-pop is an abbreviation of Japanese pop. It refers to Japanese popular musicians, and was coined by the Japanese media, to distinguish Japanese musicians from foreign musicians.

The media .. they never get the terms right for the music scene ... that's why I never listen to anything that TV or Radio presenters have to say about music and using music terms that are rather spread by a sub-culture, not coined by the media. The media usually doesn't "coin" these words, they heard it somewhere else, being mentioned probably by someone who actually has nothing to do with the musical subculture in question but is viewed by the media as a credible source.

If you ask any media person ... even those who present music as a profession... which genre a song is, 50% of the time, they will get it wrong.

So yeah ... media and music (or all modern culture for that matter) are like parallel lines ... they never intersect.

That's how so many people get their genre names wrong, and how they misunderstand and missuse terms: they listen to the dumbass presenters on MTV who were picked for their nice faces and know absolutely jack shit about music.
