Default Dutch-speaking half of Belgium declares independence

Or so it was "reported"...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6178671.stm

Quote:
The Belgian public television station RTBF ran a bogus report saying the Dutch-speaking half of the nation had declared independence.

Later it said Wednesday night's programme was meant to stir up debate.

It appears to have succeeded. Thousands of people made panicked calls to the station and politicians complained.

... I ask Herb Helbig, vehicle synthesis manager for SRT and a member of the original Team Viper development group since day one, if they'd ever thought of adding traction control. "It comes with two," he says, pointing at my feet. "Learn to use them." Got it.

I understand the purpose of the show, however I feel that they could have warned the audience instead of abruptly interrupting their regular broadcast with a realistic "special newsbulletin". Many complaints and 30 minutes later they added a "this is fake" message. A bit late me thinks. Some people were allready on the streets waving Belgian flags whilst marching in front of the Royal palace in support of the King.

About the political reactions: three things you should know:
1) Belgium is complicated and quite small (whitin 2 hours I can easily be in the Netherlands, France, Germany or Luxemburg (by car))
2) We just have had local and provincial elections, but more importantly: in 2007 we'll be having national elections.
3) Language issues (+ outsourcing National government responsibilities to the regional (language-based) governments) have been a political hot item since before I was born.
