Why the Mirage?

(granted, it's one of the few things that makes France cool, but)

At the time it was one of the fastest fighters in the world and it is widely proliferated around the world. It's in service in nine countries with over 600 planes having been built. If that hasn't made a mark on the geopolitical landscape, I don't know what has.

'Cause in a world of swept-wing jets, the deltas looked just damned otherworldly. The one-off Mirage 4000 prototype didn't hurt either.

^ Not necessarily true! There's a cool story about a F-106. From the National Museum of the U.S.A.F:

Quote:
The aircraft on display was involved in an unusual incident. During a training mission from Malmstrom Air Force Base on Feb. 2, 1970, it suddenly entered an uncontrollable flat spin forcing the pilot to eject. Unpiloted, the aircraft recovered on its own, apparently due to the balance and configuration changes caused by the ejection, and miraculously made a gentle belly landing in a snow-covered field near Big Sandy, Mont. After minor repairs, the aircraft was returned to service. It last served with the 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron before being brought to the museum in August 1986.

The delta wing provides superior super-sonic performance but sacrifices some subsonic maneuverability. It transitions very easily from the supersonic to subsonic and back again.

You should see my bookshelf, it's loaded with reference material on all kinds of things - mostly military.

But really it looks like a wonderful piece of gear images/smilies/smile.gif

My father deals with military hardware at work (Radar and RF specialist) and my boss used to work at the same place dealing with landmines (no matter how good your tank is, its gunna get fkd' up) and precision military machining. Some of the stuff out there is scary...

As a little kid I always loved the F-117 design, it was by far the most recognizable plane of them all. Despite it being replaced by the F-22, I think the F-117 is still the one that comes into mind when one thinks "stealth plane". It along with the F-8, F-14 and F-15 remain my favourites.

You are probably the first person I've met who is a fan of the F-8 Crusader, it's just not a widely remembered aircraft.

you're right GM_IV, the word stealth brings something dark and sinister to mind, the F22 looks like a regular plane too much to be remembered as much as the 117. Gonna miss that thing, it was oddly shaped, but it looks beautiful to me images/smilies/wub.gif

Is the F-15 still in production or are we simply upgrading and maintaining the fleet of Eagles as the Raptor comes online.

New production. The current aircraft are going to Korea and Singaporean jets are just around the corner.

Have we nerfed the avionics and weapons systems of those? I sure hope so.

I don't do avionics, so I don't know. I do know that not all of our technology is exportable though.
