Mao: a communist leader of post-WWII china. Arguably did more damage than Hitler and Stalin combined....estimates of death range from 20 to 72 million dead during his "Great Leap Forward" campaign. instead of being a first-world country, china used to suppress the "intellectuals" as enemies of the people. my mom was not able to attend a university after high school because universities were subversive to the people and the communist party. so china had no higher education for many years...fvking bastards.

The death toll from the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident is also a mystery as well. The official numbers range from 200 to 300, while some organizations such as the red cross inside china at the time estimates about 10 times what the officials numbers were. Although I've got to give it to the chinese for that one....standing up to such an oppressive regime. Of course everyone is scared shitless now so there won't be any similar incidents in the near future.

It was probably immense, espically when you think that the soldiers were using battlefield-grade ammunition, and were opening fire on nearby building, bystanders, each other, and the emergency services.

I was only 3 at the time so I didn't know jack. But I wouldn't be surprised if the military did do that.

What's scary is that even today in china, this is still a very much taboo topic. When I went back to China to visit my family last year I mentioned this to my dad and the first thing he said was "what?! how do you know about this? don't talk about this!"

I mean the people there are born and conditioned into not criticizing the government. And most people don't even talk about politics at all. The government has done a very well in terms of social and thought control.

And God damn do I appreciate my time here in the USA.
