Default I am an idiot

I was organizing the files/folders on my hard drive when I noticed my entire Video folder was gone (full of TV shows like Top Gear). I panicked! Thankfully I have an external backup drive but I haven't updated it in a few months. That means I lost the first three seasons of Top Gear (which I recently downloaded)...at least everything else was still there.

Moral of the story? MAKE FREQUENT BACKUPS!

I pounded the keyboard on my Dad's borrowed laptop in China out of frustration so hard that I messed up the hard drive, nearly losing almost all 3,000+ pictures I took during the trip. images/smilies/oops.gif

I thought about it, but then I read this:

System Restore is not intended for backing up personal files, so it cannot help you recover a personal file that has been deleted or damaged. You should still back up your personal files and important data on a regular basis using a backup program.

bummer, dude. that's why it makes sense to have a raid 1 config. except it's slow and a waste of space.

If you do a recovery, your "My Documents" should be intact... if you do a full destructive recovery, it wipes your computer clean.

hmm... raid helps in situations like this? My dads server at home has RAID2 and it will only help when the HD dies and not when files dissapear.

and UKD, you're not the only one who has done that images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Raid 1 is mirrored drives. This could easily be a drive problem, so it's likely backed up on the other drive

Reminds of the time when I was merging two partitions with Partition Magic.
About half way it said 'an error had occured' with error number and if I could please click 'Ok'. Did't have much choise obviously and everything was gone.

Now that's what I call magic.

Windows System Restore is more or less a way to restore a faulty program (or your computer) back to the state it was in some time ago. So if your computer starts acting up, and it might be due to a bad program or maybe adware/spyware, System Restore can reset your computer to where it was before the programs were installed or began acting up.

System Restore will not restore any files that were permenatly deleted.

Good example: I once did System Restore on my computer. I got Flight Sim reinstalled, but I didn't get all my custom aircraft back...

yeah, got autobackup program and it automaticly backs up my documents and emails and stuff whenever a file changes. Saved me a few times

The story goes i was burning arrested development episodes and i copied them from my main computer to my laptop because i was burning them on that then after i had burnt them i went to delete the episodes but instead of clicking the arrested development folder i clicked the "episodes" folder which had all of the episodes on my laptop in it, so it went and delted them..about 35ish gig worth including Curb your enthusiasm season 5 episodes, Ncis Season 3, House Season 1, Two Guys and a girl Season 1-4 and the worse one 16gig of Mythbusters episodes that was every single one ah well at least i got season 3 still on my harddrive, and i got heaps of room free now, but thats not relaly ap roblem. .it was like a year ago tho.. il just buy the dvds.. bought curb, redownloaded ncis, bought house, re got two guys and a girl..

Anyway i dont store stuff on the laptop anymore, keep it all on the main computer and copy it over if i need to aslong as i still have it on this computer. It doesnt get backed up that much but i just trust the harddrive, plus i burn all the shows i really like onto dvds so its all good.

screen shot of the current episodes folder.. notice the my computer and my networkplaces icons (car engine, car gear stick)

Anybody have trouble with Windows Media Player? I pushed the Delete button on my keyboard thinking it would remove a bunch of files from the library, not the FREAKING COMPUTER, and half my music disappeared. It was a PITA getting it all back.

Then, I was ripping a CD and it choked itslef on one song, which damaged the CD permanently so the song won't play on a CD player. images/smilies/mad.gif
