well, I almost never make threads about somewhat personal things but this can be asked here I think.
Well here's the situation. I work for a fast food restaurant (A&W) getting 8 bucks an hour. I've been trying to get out of fast food for a long time now (last 3 years) but it turns out its the only kind of job I can get. nobody else in my town pays as low as where I work. and I get the worst hours, 5-10pm about 3 days a week. I don't really make enough to live normally even still in my parents house. I'm a good worker, but in my situation Id have to magically transform into someone else to get better hours. My boss is only 27 and she really shouldn't own a full business to herself. I'm taking a year off school because I graduated first try. (wasn't sure honestly If I would or not) so I'm not going to school or anything now in a couple weeks, I just need a job that's somewhat related to cars to work at and save some money. Fast food is driving me crazy. I wanted to actually try for a car salesman position but I'm pretty sure I won't be taken seriously just because I'm not very tall and/or loud in general. The people in the dealerships sort of shrugged when I handed them a resume for a lot attendant position. so I can only Imagine what they'd think if I came in asking for a job selling cars. so I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for this kind of thing. or even if anyone has any half decent ideas. I gotta half a mind to put in a resume over at wal-mart in the auto section. Thats how badly I want to stop making burgers. Thanks in advance to anybody.

Go back to the dealership and ask if they need parts drivers. Worked for me.

If you can park cumbersome vehicles OK, then you can try to apply to a valet service. Maybe not quite as car-related as working at a dealership, but depending on where you work you can drive some pretty cool cars. Plus now that summer is almost over, they'll probably be looking for people to take the spots of the guys going off to college.

Id love to park cars and get paid to do it.
That would be awesome and I never thought about it before but I don't think there's even one valet service in Newfoundland. Hotel gander just has a medium sized parking lot. hmmm.

Malls with nice restaurants? Casino? There's usually some high class restaurants that have valet services, around here most of those can be found downtown.

Do not work at Wal-Mart. You'd be better of stealing cars for a living.

You need to apply everywhere, if it deals with cars put in an application, dress nice! Not Wal-Mart though. Don't stop there, talk to a manager, a HR lady, anyone who will listen, you can't be shy. Then send out thank you cards to wherever you applied and/or call them a week later and ask if they've reviewed your application and express how appreciative you are to be considered. All pretty straightforward stuff, it's just a lot of legwork and marketing yourself.
Don't be afraid to get in at the ground floor either, you may have to sacrifice for minimum wage again. Just get your foot in the door, my friend got a job at some NASCAR team's headquarters in Indianapolis and met all kinds of awesome people/contacts just sweeping floors and cleaning urinals. If you are truly a good worker, who takes pride in his work and doesn't complain you should be able to move up in the company quite rapidly.

My town doesn't have any of that stuff at 9 thousand people. we're actually lucky to have such things as Wal-mart and A&W in such a small place, Its just that people from all over central Newfoundland come here to do their shopping so we have a few places for that.
I'm probably gonna put one in down at Wal-mart. I walked by yesterday and some guys were just changing oil and rotating tires. I doubt they do much specialized work there seeings how you can get food and clothes from the same building

If you want to work with cars go to some local garages, not big chains. They have rules and policies and procedures when it comes to hiring people which can be annoying because you have wait and send in formal applications and what not. But, like I said, go around your town to some garages, tell them you have interest in cars. (Do you like working on cars/have any experience doing so?) If you're enthusiastic enough and have know you're stuff you might be able to land a job helping around a shop pretty easily.
Also, if you want to check out some chain garages, like oil changing places (Jiffy Lube, Kwik Car, etc.) I regularly see young looking guys working there. If they are hiring they'll get you a job and train you. |

^ you are right there, When I applied at the brand new Ford dealership they told me they had to send out my application to head office and wait for a call and all this other stuff.
I have a lot of experience working on cars, I wouldn't try hauling the engine out of my Buick alone or anything but I basically grew up around vehicles and garages.

I've thought about it, I wouldn't mind If I was zipping around town in a van or small truck delivering things or whatever. But like Big rigs/18 wheelers.... I dunno... not my kind of thing. I am going to check out local garages and stuff like that. Most shops around here are owned by random old men and they all get decent business.

^Or get a sideload driver job with Coke or Pepsi, you work your butt off, but can make $50,000 or more a year.

If you're looking to get on at a dealership; detailing. Every one of a dealership's cars has to look nice for the showroom/car lot, so they have to be cleaned. If you're lucky, one of the local dealerships gets interesting cars, like my two local Ford dealerships got half the state's Ford GTs when they were made, and one is a Saleen and Roush authorized dealer. High-end used car sales (don't know if you'd have any of those local) has a very wide array of cars. You'd have to be quite thorough in cleaning the cars, but other than that it's not a really hard job to do, just have to know how to clean a car.

I started off working as a sales rep straight after I finished high school, most of the hours are spent on the road. Maybe you can try the route I took and apply for a sales position. I enjoy bossing my customers around and keys to all the company's vehicles

Some Car Dealerships have Customer Shuttle Service and they usually hire drivers to drive customers to work, home, back to dealership etc...
They probably make a decent amount of cash. So just try

I misread this thread title as "I need a bad job".
Even though I had read it before, and even commented yesterday. I still giggled /random |
