Hopefully none of our members from Texas and the other effected states suffer to much property damage (or it's quickly fixed) and everyone stays safe.

Thankfully the windows in my dads appt only have a little tiny bit that face outwards, the rest all face into an internal courtyard, hopefully the nice gardens (they have to be seen to be beleived) people have near his appt up in river oaks aren't too badly damaged.

My dad's house has managed thus far to survive without losing power (though they might lose it during recovery) and his appt has developed leaks.

Why did I come into this thread expecting a South Park discussion?

Stay safe in the south y'all.

I hope everyone's property/lives is safe, but I am mad cause they canceled my two autocrosses this weekend. I am in San Antonio right now and it is beautiful. I kind of understand the college station one, but it will be clear tomorrow so I don't know why not.

Silly people letting something small like a hurricane getting in the way of auto racing.

Ike has already downgraded to a tropical storm.

Instead of this, why don't we talk about the 250 dead today in a Chinese mudslide? Or the 30 dead in bombings across Delhi? Or even the 20 or so people lost in the train collision in LA? Wow, the world sucks.

The original post was talking about the members in Texas who may be effected, not necessarily the storm itself. I could be wrong, but I haven't heard any news that we have members involved in the disasters you mentioned.......I think hunter showing concern about the safety of his fellow forum members actually makes the world seem like a little better of a place, especially in light of the massive amount of negativity found around the internet.

Correct, if we had members from other areas effected by disasters there would be a thread on that. Finalgear isn't a meteorological discussion board images/smilies/tongue.gif

My old man was supposed to be flying to Salt Lake city today for a conference, somehow I don't think that's going to be happening images/smilies/tongue.gif

QFT. Of course those other deaths are huge tragedies, but showing concern for people you know who might be personally affected by their own problems doesn't belittle them.

Okay all, I admit that was a bit harsh, I was just furious at the gas prices that spiked over 20 cents last night, allegedly because of Ike. Can't help getting worked up sometimes when I see how when something goes on in America it affects the whole world, but when things happen elsewhere most Americans never even hear of it.

Anyway, it's good Ike didn't turn into much, and rest assured I've been dis-rewarded for my other post already. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Well I never listen to speculation about oil prices, especially because everyone and their grandma has some kind of idea about what is going on.

But then I went in the fuel prices thread here and the consensus seemed to be that the price hike was because of Ike... although I don't know what generally justifies the most expensive gas prices in North America for us Vancouverites. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

^ Thanks Jeffy, I know it wasn't you since most respectable members would leave their name. At least it had a comment.

I completely agree and that's why I hate American media, particularly during "hurricane season". They make every storm out to be the end of the world when the same thing happened a week ago in a different part of the country. They go on and on about a storm yet when a tornado rips through this part of the country they give it just a quick mention. Does hurricane coverage really need to be on 24 hours a day when the thing is still days away from landfall?

It also bothers me sometimes when I think of how self-centered most people are. I'd feel safe in betting that the vast majority of Americans couldn't locate and name ten other countries on a map. All they seem to care about is themselves and what's going on in their country. Then they wonder why so many people around the world have a bad view of the US. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif I'm very thankful to be a part of the community here because it really is a worldwide group. It might sound weird but I feel more connected to the rest of the world by reading posts written by people instead of stories written by journalists.
