Even the two trains colliding in Los Angeles got glossed over because the media picks what it wants to show the public. But in this case lots of members could have potentially been in danger, and that's really off topic now, I'm gonna shut up. Last edited by Shawn; September 14th, 2008 at 7:58 AM. |

The first time I heard about the train crash was when I was watching a football game earlier. American media...fuck yeah!
As for the storm I really do hope everyone makes it out alright. I've seen the effects of severe flooding first hand and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Helping the Red Cross determine how much aid to give to families based on the damage to their houses is one of the most humbling experiences I've ever had.

I was thinking the same thing... whenever someone mentions something about ike to me, I just yell "KICK THE BABY!!"

Well I'm back from feeling the effects of Ike all the way inland here in Ohio. We had sustained winds of about 40mph with gusts up to 70 for most of the afternoon yesterday. Here are some of the effects just from around here:
![]() ![]() The first tree was two houses down from me and the other was on a nearby street. That one just barely missed a house and a minivan. There is also a power line hanging down in the street just around the corner. We lost a few limbs off trees and a shingle blew off our roof. Fortunately nobody around here was badly hurt but the high winds knocked out electricity for about 1.5 million people in the region and many will likely be without power until late this week. All of this from just the remnants of the hurricane. I can't imagine what the full force would be like. With the winds we technically experienced a tropical storm in Ohio. That's insane!

I know a good bit of people who live in the Houston area, specifically my uncle. They were some of the ones who decided to ride it out. Their house was undamaged but I believe they lost a tree. I heard power was out, not sure how long that will be.
Some of those pictures are amazing. The one with the house standing among the total debris was on the front page of the Arlington Star Telegram. I did find the coverage a bit...over the top? But I'm sure they got good ratings, after all that's what it's all about. I can't imagine having to live in Cuba, Puerto Rico, or any of the Caribbean islands. They must have to go through hell every year in hurricane season. I wonder how many hit them per year? Hardly ever hear of it though, at most a mere mention. Pretty sad. |
