Is everyone in the western hemisphere going to soon be dead?

News reports from geologists are saying that the Yellowstone natl park supervolcano is starting to act up

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081230/...owstone_quakes

Here's info on the BBC/discovery channel docudrama that was made speculating what would happen if the yellowstone caldera were to actually blow and how it would affect this hemisphere and probably the planet

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano_(docudrama)

and the entry on the yellowstone volcano itself

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera

That would mean I couldn't get anything from the Newegg California warehouse! That's where they keep all the good stuff!

    From the article
He said the quakes have ranged in strength from barely detectable to one of magnitude 3.8 that happened Saturday.

"We haven't had earthquakes in this energy or extent in many years."

Yellowstone has had significant earthquakes as well as minor ones in recent decades. In 1959, a magnitude 7.5 quake near Hebgen Lake just west of the park triggered a landslide that killed 28 people.
I'll worry about the super volcano when it actually explodes till then, meh.

The point is an ash bed that huge means enough ash being throw into the air to cause a volcanic winter, similar to a theoretical nuclear winter...it becomes everyone's problem.

and youre really sounding ignorant if you forget that the majority of the US food production occurs in those central states. You think your comfortable lifestyle and diet is being supported entirely by local community produce? Don't fool yourself. Those who arent immediately killed will starve...

Plus the supererupttions have been occuring every 600-700K years with regularity, so we're within the window of the next one happening.

Maybe thats what the 2012 prediction is all about.

Well, yeah. But on the other hand a Volcanic Winter would make AL Gore shut the fuck up about global warming. So we have that going for us.

So what's the plan for stopping the Super Volcano from erupting? I mean my personal earth core drilling vehicle is in the shop, threw a fuel rod when I hit a diamond deposit, so someone else is gonna have to fix this. Perhaps we can get the EU or the UN to draw up a resolution to ban Super Volcanoes due to carbon emissions, that might work. Or maybe we can take whats left of the polar ice caps and drop them into the lava.

Oh noooo ... Obama, save us!! We're all going to die!
It's journalists exaggerating again, kiddos. I wouldn't panic until the scientists themselves say "She's gonna blow!".

I can't really see scientists saying "Oh by the way, we're going to be wiped off the face of the planet...", most likely they'd just avoid the panic.

That's the thing if it happens it happens, theres no way to mass evacuate ppl in any meaningful fashion because nobody will have any idea when exactly it'll happen and our super science isnt going to cook up any brilliant ideas on how to stop it. natural phenomena are natural phenomena and so far we haven't demonstrated a proven track record at controlling nature so far.
