This is a scan of the question from my text book:

I got an answer, but I don't know if your teacher would accept it. I arrived at it by taking the limit of y as x approaches zero and then doubling the result.

Never done this before in maths all I can say is x +2y = 180 degrees obviously so y is 60 degrees.

He's not looking for y though, because it doesn't have a fixed value. And x + 2y doesn't equal 180 degrees, either. images/smilies/wink.gif

Would you be terribly disappointed if I told you that the sum of the angles in a triangle isn't 360 degrees? images/smilies/tongue.gif

(good job on noticing the isosceles triangle btw)

That seems a bit over the head. This problem is more geometric than calculus.

Incorrect because of:

The problem with this problem is that there are no givens, outside of the fact that CD is the diameter of the circle and that AB is tangent to the circle. The inside angle of the triangle BCT and triangle BDT are not given, therefore you cannot assume x + 2y = 180. That and saying that "x + 2y = 180 there for y=60" is also incorrect because as far as we know x does not equal y, and BCT is not an equallateral or isocolies triangle.
