Hi there ...
I'll be spending a weekend in Birmingham to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mini (IMM2009 7.8.-10.8.2009). After that I'll meet a friend in London and will fly back home to Germany at the 23.8. from Newcastle ... so we've about 13 days to get from London to Newcastle (by car). My friend planed some stops in Brighton, Land's End, Oxford, Blackpool, Lake District ... Any suggestions of places we have to go? Greetings Michael

I would take Blackpool off your list, it's not really all that great. Anyway, here is where I would go/do;
South East; + National Maritime Museum (London). + Imperial War Museum (London). + Windsor Castle and Windsor Great park (Berkshire -about 25 miles south/west of London). + Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (Portsmouth) North East; + Bamburgh Castle (it's about 50 miles N. of Newcastle. It's really beautiful and the beaches are lovely too). + Haedrian's Wall (starts in Newcastle and runs across most the width of Northern England. The most northernly part of the Roman Empire to keep the Scottish out!).

Portsmouth - go up the Spinaker tower too. Try to get a decent pint there as well - Hall & Woodhouse/Huntsman/Wadsworth are the brewers of choice you may encounter. I like the Surrey Arms in Commercial Road but you'll probably be in old Portsmouth so not too close.
Into Cathedrals? Try the one in Salisbury - huge but the road system is shite there still. ... Up North York is great! And whilst there try to get some Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Bitter whilst up there, actually everything they brew is wonderful. ... Their Organic Lager is not too shabby if you like that sort of thing, either. Market towns? Try Blandford Forum in Dorset - home of Hall and Woodhouse, they brew under licence Hoffbrau and do not make a bad fist of it. Nothing special to see in Southampton nor Bournemouth imho.

It amazes me that you people of Southampton don't errect some form of museum there. America's founding fathers left from your city, ran into bad weather and then left from Plymouth. But they left originally from Southampton, Damnit! Also, you had the titanic leave there
