I can't believe they let residential burning of coal go on in CA (I always considered them the "Clean by Regulation" ones). In my city it's banned, but that probably has to do with the areas rich history of coal production. After a while they realised the harmful effects and put a kibosh on it.

On a totally unrelated note: Tomorrow or the day after I am taking my mom down to pick out a pistol then we are going to sign up for the Concealed Carry Permit class.

My sister's a mod on a Pokemon forum. Lately, she's been complaining about somebody repeatedly posting porn and links to sites that infect the visitor's computer with a virus. When he is, predictably, banned, he comes back under a new name.

Really disgusts me that people feel they can do whatever they want at the expense of whoever they want under the anonymity of the Internet.

^ Can't they just ban his IP?

Blind, why does your mom need a pistol and what exactly is that license? Can't you just carry in the US as part of your constitutional rights?

No, you can own a gun, as long as you are not a felon or prohibited by law, and you can't own any gun you want. Long guns (hunting rifles, shotguns, etc) you can pick up without a license in most states (there are a few exceptions). Pistols are more varied from state to state, some, like California, require pistols to be registered with a state database. There are some weapons where you need to have a special license from the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms - or as we call it, Friday night images/smilies/wink.gif) those are things like fully automatic machine guns, pistols and assault rifles. You can even own small artillery field guns with the right permit, interestingly enough, I don't think there has ever been a case where someone with this type of ATF permit has used their weapons in a crime.

In Utah you can buy a pistol, you can even walk around with one on your hip if you want, but you need a permit to carry a concealed weapon. There is a class you take that teaches you about safety, the laws about carrying, and how to handle your pistol safely so it doesn't get taken away and used against you. There is also a practical course where you must demonstrate your ability to draw and accurately fire at various ranges.

We have a variety of pistols already, but they are all heavy full-frame pistols that don't really fit my mom's hands that well. I want her to find one that fits her perfectly so she is comfortable carrying and shooting it.

^ Hey, some interesting info. I thought guns in the US were a free for all. In Canada you need to get them registered, but I think that's just for shotguns as pistols are illegal? I'm not even sure as we were never a gun owning family.

It's a common misconception that you can walk into any corner drug store and walk out with an AK-47 or Glock along with your cough drops and hair product. There are background checks and other checks in place to keep legally sold guns out of the hands of felons and the mentally unstable - however there are always ways to get what you want, legal or not.

This is why I don't believe in stricter gun control; there are enough laws on the books to regulate legal gun sales, it's the ones that are already being done out of the trunk of a car that need to be addressed, and passing laws does nothing about it.

What does she actually need to carry a concealed gun for? Going to the bad part of town?

Because she will be living alone and that makes her vulnerable. My dad talked to her about it before but they never got around to it before he died. I have to go back to California eventually and we would both feel better if she had the means to defend herself. We already got an alarm for the house but that does not protect her when she's not home.

What a week, and it isn't done yet.

Monday: Battery died in my car. $135 later and the car is fine images/smilies/thumbdown.gif

Tuesday: Interview was set up through an agency at CAMI Automotive plant images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Wednesday: Video card decided it needs better cooling images/smilies/wallbash.gif.

Thursday: Interview went extremely well images/smilies/thumbsup.gif. One of the top running candidates for the position. images/smilies/driving.gif down the highway, Trac off and CEL light came on. images/smilies/thumbdown.gif. Diagnosed it further with a buddy of mine and I have a thermostat that is stuck open images/smilies/happy.gif (good news) but my outer CV joint is making noise images/smilies/blowup.gif. The CV joint is not my car's fault. I was kinda hard on it for the past 70,000 km images/smilies/blush.gif.

Got two more calls. One was a job that I can start Monday where my mom works images/smilies/thumbup.gif but it is not in my field. The other phone call was a recruiter calling about a position to be a BES admin images/smilies/thumbsup.gif.

Still tomorrow left...I don't know what to expect images/smilies/dunno.gif.

Ok, guys, please. I know most people don't know this, but the radio presenters you hear on the air are NOT DJs. You see, a DJs role s to create a musical presentation for a dance floor. It goes back to the days where vinyl records would be played out on a single turntable and somebody was assigned to pick out the music for the party and change the discs when one song ended to keep the people dancing and having a good time. DJs wouldn't speak one word. Nowadays the art of DJing has evolved to the point where songs are being blended into each other in a seamless fashion and the work of the DJ is not only creating the atmosphere on the dance floor, but to express themselves creatively by combining soundscapes from different settings. And still, they don't speak a word.

Those radio presenters are NOT DJs!! They don't pick out the music that they want to present to the crowd, they don't even pick out the order. It's whatever the music companies pay the radio station to play that's being played. That being said, nowadays radio presenters don't even actually play the songs. That's all done by technicians in the studio ... with a list in front of them saying which music labels paid the most to have their stuff on the air. They don't pick out the music, they don't pick out the order, they speak and they don't even play for a crowd, they play for themselves. That's NOT DJing.

So please guys, from now on, stop calling these jackass jukeboxes "DJs". It's degrading to all us real DJs around the world. It's just as emberassing as calling train conductors "engineers". If you want to call them something, call them music jurnalists, in which case it would be fair because half of them can't tell good music to save their lives. And no, they're not even MCs, MCing is an art and should not be mistaken for the poor excuse of "professional opinion" that they have.

There's no such thing as a radio DJ ... they're nothing more than human chatterboxes.

No, pistols can be legally owned ... at least in Ontario ... but it's close to impossible to get a license so you can own one.

No. My brother has a restricted firearms license and he will purchase a handgun one of these days. We saw some good ones for $600 used.
