I think the use of the word "rape" has gone too far in online games and It has become both sick and disturbing in meaning. When I started to play my first online game 5 years ago the word was never used in its present context and was hardly ever to be seen on any form of game chat. Now a days the word is used everywhere. People even have binded keys for in-game to say something to the lines of "Raped" or "I raped you". On Xbox live a few times people have threatened to even "Rape" me.

Here's also a log from a game my friend sent me just now.

Okay, silly joke with no point really. I wouldn't use the term raped personally. But I bet you can imagine what kind of people use these terms. Dumb kids who spend a little to much time on their computer and is afraid of sunlight and real social life.

The word "rape" can mean a lot more than forced sex. Look it up:

Unless you personally know someone or have yourself been sexually assaulted, then the general consensus is that you're overreacting. It's not exactly a good thing to say, but there are far more disgusting things to do on t3h intarw3bz than say that you "raped" somebody by shooting him in the face in Counter-Strike.

When I hear people say "raped" in an online FPS, it's never when you simply defeat an enemy; it's normally when someone does something nasty such as in BF2 when an opponent exploits a spawn point by sitting behind it and blasting guys as they spawn in (know as "spawn raping"). I personally avoid such practices....most of the time, unless I'm in a bad mood images/smilies/wink.gif

So this use of the word rape has nothing to do with the sexual connotations of the word, but rather the "raping and plundering" aspects.

Of course pirates did a lot of sexual rape when possible during that "raping and plundering."

Either way, I don't think it matters. You could taunt me by claiming "I totally just unlawfully forced sexual intercourse on you" and it wouldn't bother me. In both cases there is a clear dissociation of whatever humiliation happened that you were powerless to stop and the actual act of raping someone.

Then again, one of my favorite drinking songs includes the verse "I wish that all the ladies; were statues like Venus; They wouldn't have arms; to push away my penis," so it is clear that verbal atrocities don't bother me.
