Default What if I..

Hello guys.. I don't really post here and nor I am very popular here, but I do browse the forums everyday.. and so. Anyways, coming to the point, I wanted to ask that if I tell you that I'm working for a company Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (K.O.R.T.) based in UK and we are collecting donations for the children who were orphaned because of the earthquake that happened on 8th October 2005.. We are currently providing accommodation, education, medical care and sports facilities to more than a hundred orphans as of now and our aim is to create a complex that will accommodate more than thousand orphans and other children who can't afford to live, by December 2009. We have the land, given to us by the government of Kashmir. Lord Nazir, Lord Ahmed and MP Marsha Singh are supporting our organization..

What would your reaction be?
Would you donate?
If you would, how much would you?

visit www.kort.org.uk for more information.

1113836 is our charity registration number, you can check the organization's authenticity by visiting www.charity-commission.gov.uk

Any feedback would be helpful and appreciated. I would want you people to be neutral when commenting, thank you.

I am pretty in touch with the Pakistani community in the US and I have not heard of KORT before. Guess you guys are in the UK only. Seems like a good cause but I would have to look in to it more.
As for myself, well I have donated to local US charity funds for the Pakistan Earthquakes.

Again I would need maybe some UK member to chime in and figure out if you guys are legit or not. In today's world of scams its hard to tell.

We've donated to US-based charities regarding the earthquake and also for the tsunami victims. My parents and I made sure not to donate to places like Red Cross where 75% of the money apparently goes to the admins and only 25% goes to the actual charity itself.

Edit/ps: I'm not calling you stupid btw Zuhaib, it's just the emoticon images/smilies/tongue.gif

Hey!

Did you visit KORT's website and did you check the charity registration number?

Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, the prime minister of Azad Jammu Kashmir..Marsha Singh, the Member of Parliament (UK), Lord Nazir and Lord Ahmed from the House of commons are supporting KORT. The land of area 100 canals was given to KORT by the government of Kashmir..and work on the land has already been started and is progressing slowly..KORT's office is in Mirpur aswell..

I request you to visit the gallery on www.kort.org.uk when you get the time to.

And one more thing, I'm not getting anything out of it, I'm just volunteering for the company.. just finished my A'Level so thought of doing something...

Its not like that here, any amount you would donate is going directly into the charity. The Govt of Kashmir or the UK aren't getting anything out of it, in fact, they are supporting KORT in advertising the campaign and are also sponsoring a call center for that.

I would say that I wouldn't believe you and that I wouldn't donate anything. If a charity would ask for donations, they would do so through a public service announcement through the media, not on an internet forum.

And even if you guys are legit, I don't believe in charitable organizations. I've seen WAY too many phony charitable organizations that pose as charities, and as zuhaib said, close to nothing actually goes towards their cause. I'm also aware that all charitable organizations, especially in Canada resort to some unlawful ways in order to raise awareness to their cause and get more donations.

So, I've helped charities in the past, and you know what I got for it? Stress.

And why do all charities ask for money nowadays? Whatever happened to asking people to donate blankets for earthquake victims? Whatever happened to asking people for food donations for a cause? And what happened to actually performing a service to the public in exchange of the donations money? Charities that do this are still around, but compared to the money-hungry charities that sit on their ass and call people at 10PM in the evening to ask for donations, there's really not that many of them.

So no, I will never help a charity with a money donation ever again. I'll give them what they need in order to help people in need, but never money. Money doesn't help people, what you can buy with money is split between what helps and what doesn't. I'd rather know that my money goes towards what helps.

But the best way to give to charity is not money, nor possessions. In these days the only way to really help a charity is to give your precious time to them and actually go to where people are in need and help them. There's nothing more precious than that. Now that's what I'd give to charity ... money can never meet that value.

PS: Someone please move this thread to the Political Discussions section.

As I have said before, we are collecting money for a complex that has to be constructed in Mirpur, that will accommodate more than 1000 orphans and other children who cannot afford to live. Its not the company which is advertising on an internet forum, its just me, a volunteer for the company, the reason behind is simple, i have relatives who live in that area i have asked and confirmed from them that if the work is really being done.. and they said yes, it is being done. Yes there is an office in Mirpur.. there is a small building which has accommodated some hundred orphans.. and work on the land on which the complex has to be constructed is in progress.

And as for the food and blankets thingy, the people who were affected by the earthquake are provided with blankets, foods, tents etc.. by many organizations even KORT. What KORT is aiming for is to give the children and orphans the standard of living and education that can shape their lives well, the standard which WE are living. The food which WE eat. The sports facilities like we have!

Many people donated MANY things to the earthquake victims. Even my family, we managed almost two trucks full of edible items, blankets, mattresses, first aid kits etc etc.. my uncle visited the site personally to evenly distribute the things. But, what then? Yes, the grown up people would manage themselves, what about the children who were orphaned? Yes, the orphans got the blankets, the food etc.. Then? what about the rest of their life? what about education, you cannot donate education, can you? That is what we are collecting money for, to provide accommodation to the orphans, to educate them, to make them as good as we are.
