Default Will trade Blood for Oil

http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Ameri...ood_18122.html

Quote:
As the number of people willing to donate blood has going down in recent years, the U.S. is now facing an increased demand for blood supply. Therefore, the American Red Cross has come up with a plan meant to boost the number of donors, namely they are offering free gas and other gifts to those who donate blood.

The plan is also intended to keep the high level of blood donations coming in through the summer months, as the supply usually decreases during this period of the year, because they are not able to go to high schools and recruit more donors.

A study published in the May 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that young donors aged 17 and 18 are the most involved in blood donations. At the same time, the rate of donations from older individuals has declined.

The new plan coming from the American Red Cross will offer those donating blood the chance to win free gas among other gifts and such. And with gas prices now exceeding $4 in some places around the U.S., the Red Cross is hoping to make more people donate blood, thus helping their peers in need.

In order to be a good donation candidate, one must meet certain criteria, including a weight of at least 110 pounds.

Also, donors are urged to drink lots of water, get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious meal before donating blood in order to avoid donation-related problems.
Does it have to be my blood? Because if not, then my gas bill just went way down!

My parents always have, and I always will give blood (once I'm old enough). If I get free petrol, then why not? And where is the money for this coming from exactly?

Not sure, probably donated by the gas retailers and written off as a donation on their taxes... so technically it would be the US Taxpayer.

Nah man, I'm good. I already got a fresh shipment of blood in earlier this week. I'll let you know when I'm about to order more, though.

That's not a bad idea, here you just get a cookie and some applejuice. I'm not allowed to give blood though.

Seriously, standarts of whom is a suited donor seem to vary a lot among nations and even faculties. Over here donating at the red cross is rather uncomplicated when you don´t have any illnesses or unusual stuff. Donating at my local university hospital proves to be much harder. Be pierced or tatooed and you are out of it, even if that has been done years back. But then they pay you 20 to 40 Euros (on top of food and drinks) if you are suited ... that´s not so bad. For example, you could donate thrombocytes specially, with 2 weeks between donations (male), and get 40 Euros ... keep that up for a year and you´d have close to a 1000 Euros in your Pocket ...

... looking at oil-prices and their development ... it doesn´t seem like that blood would do any good in terms of price. Maybe the blood is not traded, but added ... like "Oil - now with more natural additives ... from A+ to AB-" ...

We would donate but I have the same high blood pressure situation as mentioned above and my wife has had three invasive operations during the period when blood was bought from the US without the precautionary processing; so now we can not donate. Now the question I have is why the fuck were we buying blood from the US in the early 1990s? I saw the programme which exposed the scam and the people that the US companies were using as donors then. Also it is rather worrying that we are/were selling the stuff to Turkey at about the same time - I smell the rat that is money grubbing crooks.

I always donate (in the UK) when I can - it's entirely donation-done in the UK, no incentives except for a cup of tea afterwards.

I hate needles but I grin and bear it and I'd encourage anyone else to. Your pint of blood could save someone's life - or several babies' lives - and that makes you a superhero in my book.

Sadly I can't donate at the moment, but when I'm back in the UK I'll get straight back onto it.

The chance to win free gas? Why not just give us coupons? Only then would I might be able to overcome my growing fear of needles.

I can't give blood either. I just about pass out and/or go into shock when they have to take a blood sample for lab tests I would never make it through a whole donation session.

It is seriously embarrassing to be a big 200 plus pound nearly six foot guy and a couple of 50 cc blood samples about knock you out. I wouldn't have any problem loosing a couple hundred CCs of blood out of a cut or wound but the blood going into the container through the needle does me in.

Hey people, if you can you should give blood for no reason. </soapbox>
