Can't solve a mathematical equation?, can't remember a particular thing?

Ask here and see if someone else knows!

I'll start with my mathematical equation.

a Log (x-5) = a² Log (7-x)

And the "a"'s are not random numbers like 5 times log...but it's the (don't know correct word in english). It's the a like in x²...it's the "macht" (power, wrong free translation)

The general rule is ^g Loga^b = b^g log a
The b is no normal number in my equation! It's the higher (x² one, it's the 2)

^aLog(x-5) = ^a² Log (7-x)

I have this rule: ^g Log (a^b) = b x ^g Log (a)

MXM, Chaos and Raspberri said this rule could be applied here but I still don't think that's possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong.. images/smilies/smile.gif

Maybe you should draw the equation in paint or something with all the proper symbols? images/smilies/smile.gif

I got the answer from a classmate, he called a teacher.

Oh, I see. So a^2 is the base of logarithm. Although I've never seen it written that way. Usually the base is written with small digits after the LOG.
It is the same rule. You skipped a few steps on your drawing, that's why it looks weird.

Is ABC-formula a normal English word? Cause we even have different words for it.

yes, I i'm not good either in Log and the 'ABC-formula'. but you can use your calculator for 'ABC-formula'

You need only two rules for this problem:
(x^a)^b = x^(a*b)
and
a*log(x)=log(x^a)
I'm pretty sure they are in any book images/smilies/smile.gif

That thing is called quadratic formula if I remember correctly.

i still got a long way to go with math...
currently taking: differential equation, theoretical statistics
and i stil have to take discrete math and 2nd part of the statistics course. probably some more that i don't even know about... images/smilies/yucky.gif

heh discrete can be a pain especially if you get it with Brown or Shockley. DiffEq is really dependent upon the teacher. luckily Im through most of my math (only have combinatorics left and thats this semester)
