Default Best Point and Shoot Digi cam

I've been looking around for a new point and shoot digi cam for a little bit. The two brands I've been looking at are canon and nikon.

I've been interested in the canon sd1100 but it's biggest competition is it's older brother the sd1000. I don't know too much about photography or photography vocabulary but I want to learn about it. The camera will be used to take family pics especially of my 2 1/2 month old nephew, pictures of my cars under halogen lighting and just random shots.

My price limit is probably nothing over $250ish.

Would you want something very compact that can fit in your pocket? Or something bigger with a more serious lens?

Sounds like he's looking for something very compact since he mentions the Canon Elphs. I like having the optical view finder which is missing in the SD 1000. I've been very happy with my Canons. I had an SD100 that was stolen. I bought an S2 that is cool, but not pocketable so I bought an SD600. I run a 15 member photo department and we made the switch from Nikon to Canon because of the better image quality, repair record and customer service regarding repairs.

Ultimately, the best camera answer is one that makes sense to you and will inspire you to use it. Some folks think they want all the bells, whistles and Freudian tele-zooms and they never take it anywhere because of its bulk or never figure out the functions. Some folks think they must have an SLR, but I have made shots with my point & shoot that others with SLRs have missed or never would have been able to make.

How about a Canon 720IS? IMHO it is a decent cam and you can have all the manual controlls too.

Rather have something with better picture quality. I'm using point and shoot as a loose term. I'd be the type to actual learn the functions but I can't afford or I wouldn't be able to fully use a SLR.

I don't mind if it's bulky just as long as it takes crisp clear photographs and will allow me to adjust somethings so I can feel like I'm taking the photo lol. I don't like Sonys after owning a couple but I've heard great things about Canon and Nikon. It seems that Canon has more midrange cameras than Nikon though.

in addition to the 720IS and the usual S5IS (heard the S6IS is coming out soon, so no point going for the S5 now), then there are the FZ8 and FZ18 from panasonic worth looking at.

I recommend reading the reviews of the specific models on www.dpreview.com. They always make good conclusions / recommendations and have sample shots of real life situations for every camera. images/smilies/thumbup.gif

Great website.

Anyone have experience with the Panasonic DMCFZ18K? I mostly only hear people talking about Canon and Nikon. It's a bit more than I want to spend but it looks like I'd be able to add lens and could use it for quite a while, while I learn all the features.
