You call it ability to go down to ISO 100, but the fact is that it MUST go down to 100 because it's less sensitive having smaller active detector area (pixels shrink down, service area doesn't!). D40's 6mpx sensor will get same results on ISO 200 as D60 on ISO 100, and it will do it with 1 stop advantage.

Sensor cleaning sounds like a gimmick to me. Maybe it really works, but even so it's only relevant if you have more than one lens.

Significant in that it's the camera business's biggest gimmick, yes. Dust that remains in the mirror box will just get sucked back onto the sensor. The only way to get rid of dust is to remove it properly.

QFT, all it does is shake the dust off the sensor, no more.

well not exactly, that same deal was about $ 650 - 700 here so that's not horrible pricing nor that big a difference.

Haz, do I know you from bilforumet? images/smilies/smile.gif

First of all, the most important thing in a camera is the ergonomics, the grip. The difference in ergonomics from camera to camera is a lot more crucial than the difference in image quality. It's good on all the modern dSLRs.

To find the right camera, get into a JapanPhoto or FotoVideo shop in Oslo. There are several. Apart from usually being cheapest, they are well stocked, and their staff are very good. (If you wish to check their prices, or just where their shops are located, add a .no to the company names. images/smilies/smile.gif)

Set yourself a budget, set aside what's needed for a good bag and a memory card around 4gb, then tell the salesman how much you can spend. Then ask to try the cameras in question, feel how they feel in your hand. Perhaps one feels to small in your hand? And another feels a little big? Perhaps the third you try feels perfect.

Get the one that fits you the best.

I am by no means saying you shouldn't get the D40. It's a great beginner camera. But so are other cameras, and there might be a camera out there that fits your budget, but fits your hands better.

And remember, the lowest prices on camera gear in Norway is to be found at prisguide.akam.no - they feature almost any webshop that sells directly to Norway, and lets you find your product at the cheapest price.

Good luck!

Unless the dust sticks to some sort of sticky film in the cavity around the sensor. As it does with some brands. I can not say I have ever sceen a single dot of dust, and I do change lenses in pretty bad conditions. As long as it works, it's really not a gimmick.

As for ISO100, it's nice to have. It will let you use longer shutter speeds, which does come in handy from time to time. But not having it isn't a dealbreaker, though. Especially since you can get an ND filter to do the job.

Edit2: And as for which of the cheap Nikons I'd get. The D40, no brainer. It's cheaper, the 6mp is easily enough for almost any use, the only real difference between the D40 and the D40x is 4 extra megapixels, 3fps agains the D40s 2.5fps, and, uhm, not much else. Just to note, 6mp is easily enough for an A3 print. images/smilies/smile.gif

As for the D60. It's a D40x with 'D40x' crossed out and 'D60' written in with crayons. Okay, there are differences, but none are so significant I'd even consider the D60 with it's higher price. The only good thing with it is the VR lens. But that can be had for not much money anyhoo.

images/smilies/smile.gif Hyggelig.
