Usually, X = a number.

Dxxxx would be D3000/D5000. D300s is still technically DXXX.

Nikon Whores GTFO.

I'm currently selling my gripped 40D and my Siggy 10-20 with the intent of replacing them with a 5D MKII and eventually a 16-35 2.8 L.

I'm doing a lot more static work recently and the 5D MKII is the obvious choice, as I still have the 1D MKII N for any track / action work. But what also has me interested is the HD video mode. It's not just the video mode itself but the fact I can use proper shallow DoF lenses that has me keen on the idea. I've always had an interest in video but couldn't justify splashing out on an expensive video camera only to find out that really, I have no interest in shooting lots of video. As I read through reviews, the 5D MKII seems to be getting a bit of a tough time in the video stakes. I know its not 'perfect' but for me it was a perfect stopgap to explore the video world.

Then they released the 7D ...

Although its not FF it 'should' be a better stills camera than the 40D but obviously it won't be a patch on the 5D MKII. But in the video stakes, it really shines. Better video quality, more options, basically all the things the 5D MKII should of had. What really appeals to me is the ability to shoot at 720P instead of 1080P and at 60FPS instead of 30FPS.

Doesn't help that the 7D is a lot cheaper than the 5D MKII as well ...

So, can anyone talk sense into me ?

I'm must of been in some state last night to even consider a Nikon.

*shudders*

I reckon if Canon release a firmware update that would match the 7D's video capabilities on the 5D2, I'd be sold on the 5D2 ...

Isn't there a hacked firmware for the 5d2 that has pro level video controls?

Aye, there is magic lantern which gives you more control but I'm really looking for 720P instead of 1080P.

Being honest, I'm afraid my MBP will poo itself when trying to edit 1080P footage !

Couldn't you simply re-encode the 1080p footage at some smaller resolution and tell final cut pro/avid to use the 1080p footage at render time?

if you want video, 7d is the answer then. shoots excellent video. Then you can always save up for 5d MKII. I m going with 5d MKII first and then saving for 7d to get better video lol.

Decided on the 5D2 afterwards, I'm a photographer first and besides, good videos are about imagination, not equipment !

I noticed on your website that you do a lot of rolling and tracking shots. 7d is better for that imho. 5d autofocus is a joke, its mostly a portrait/landscape camera but you already knew that probably

I wouldn't knock the 5d2's AF. You just need to know how to draw out the best out of it to do so.

Cropped to that size exactly. No shrinkage done

I'm sure the 7d's AF is better than the 5d2 for what I do but February's half a year away.
