This is a must have for everyone! Makes a good portrait lens in front of a 1,6x crop dSLR. Excellent value for money.

I did not know they made a MK III version. The main difference between the MKI and MKI is the lens mount and build quality.

On the MKI the mount is metal like most other lenses and the build quality is better more along the lines of a normal EF lens. However the MKI lenses are not made anymore and are older so focus could become an issue. They are also about 75% more expensive $140 vs $80.

The MKII version I own and Recomend people say are the same optically however the Lens mount is plastic and the build quality is not the best. The entire lens is plastic and I would hate to drop it. If it breaks you are only out $80. However It takes wonderfull photos.

Here are a few photos I have taken with the lens. Some of the macro looking shots have Close up filters on the lens to increase its magnification

anyone who doesn't have a canon or nikon 50mm 1.8 should get one.. unless maybe you can afford and want a 35 or 85mm or are pretty sure you have no use for one. The Nikon 50mm 1.8 will probably be my first purchase once I get my own SLR.

thanks to this thread, otherwise i never would've been aware that there is such thing as a 1.8f lens for $80! i've just gotten a 20d very recently as this will be the first lens (besides the kit lens) that i'll be buying for it!

the lens, for such a simple bit of plastic is fantastic,

also, having 50mm makes you work harder, but also helps make you a better photographer/see better

I can't wait to get my 85mm 1.8. I've used my friends a few times and it is amazing! I'd get it over the 50mm 1.8 ANY TIME. It focuses WAY faster, build quality is better, but it does cost 3x more money (around 350€). But imo it is worth it.
