Default Colin McRae Subaru Impreza Tribute Parade

So today there was a parade of Subaru Imprezas from Lanark in Scotland to the Prodrive HQ in Banbury.

http://www.mcrae-gathering.co.uk/

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/...st/7588713.stm

I didn't know anything about it, but my dad mentioned it to me on MSN and I did some research, and it turned out that they would be coming down the M6, and they were scheduled to hit Junction 14 at around 3pm. It was 2:15pm at the time and I live in Stafford, between Junctions 14 and 13.

I grabbed my cameras, hopped in the car and drove to one of the bridges over the M6 and waited patiently!

3pm came and still no sign of anything. I was worried I'd missed it, but seeing the odd Impreza going the other way kept me there. I did see a convoy of four heading north on the M6 and assumed they were going to the next junction to turn around and join the convoy (as I'd read that the main parade would be stopping in various services along the way and people would be tagging along).

I could see a couple of people gathering on a bridge further down, so that also kept my hopes up!

Then a car appeared on "my" bridge and a family got out. They lived nearby and had come down from Middlesbrough, they said that every bridge on the M6 had people on it, some totally packed, but they didn't know why. I explained, and thanked them, as they'd proved I definitely hadn't missed it!

At about 3:45pm they came into view! It was pretty amazing! Imprezas in the inside lane of the motorway for about 20 minutes solid! All of them waving, beeping and flashing their lights!

Unfortunately, I don't think I caught Colin's championship winning 555 car which was being driven by his dad, Jimmy. It was supposed to be leading the pack, but it wasn't when they appeared, and they were coming so thick and fast I didn't spot it!

Anyway, a few pics!

Usually the only processions we have like that around here on highways are either annoying things like large groups of people protesting by slowing down traffic or sombre things like a fallen soldier's repatriation.

I and at least one person I know would have loved to see a Subaru parade in person. Thanks for the pics!

That is amazing! And somewhat touching, too. Loads of people using their beloved cars to pay homage to a great person, that left us before we'd expect. +rep !

What a tribute to the great man!

The 555 car and Jimmy was only going to lead the convoy between Banbury (where it still lives) and the Prodrive Test track in Warwickshire. Such a historic car, I don't think they want to wear it out!

seen this in the papers today

they went to prodrives track and arranged the cars to spell Colin Mcrea... apparently you could see it from the sky if you happened to be landing at birmingham aiport.

Just saw this:

Quote:
Oh, those Brits. When they're not faking making corn circles they're writing a rally legend's name using 1,086 Subaru Imprezas as pixels. This, of course, was the finale to the weekend long celebration of Colin McRae's life, which saw over 1,100 Scoobys converge on Prodrive's test track in Warwickshire. Precisely how many cars took part in the ensuing 30-mile convoy is unknown, but if you don't have anything better to do right now, you can have a go at counting them in the video after the jump (and look out for the near miss at 6:42). Even the local constabulary showed up in a WRX pursuit car.

The half-mile-long sign you see above broke the Guiness World Record for, err, writing signs with cars by a cool 800, but more importantly Colin's fans raised over $80,000 for the McRae family's chosen charities.
