Default Hey, I'm back (yes, I know, you care...not) with a new camera and a question...

So, I just bought a new Nikon D40 kit with an 18-55mm lens. I love it. It takes fantastic pictures.

Anyway, I'll be going to a concert tonight. This is my favorite band and I would love to get some shots of them playing live, but the ticket says "No Cameras/Recorders". Now, it's been a long time since I've gone to a concert, and I have no idea what the "security" will be like (I figure the worst that can happen is I'll have to go put it back in my car).

So, my questions are...
  • Should I just try to conceal it? I'd prefer to take the whole bag (not a terribly big bag, but not particularly easy to hide). I can take off the lens to put in an inside pocket of my jacket and then carry the camera body on my person (wearing the neckstrap under my jacket).
  • This concert is in a hockey arena. I don't have floor seats, I'm in the first (lowest) section of one end of the rink, the band will be playing about three-quarters down the length of the rink. The rink surface is regulation size (200' x 85'), I should be, at most, 250 feet from the stage. With the highest resolution (6.1MP) and quality, will I get good pictures from where I'm sitting?

I expect an answer from you shortly, BerserkerCatSplat images/smilies/tongue.gif (kidding, of course images/smilies/wink.gif)

Pretty much at all concerts I've gone to, secutiry makes you take everything out of your pockets and then they pat you down.

^ What bands do you go and see?

They are only trying to (unfortunately for you) stop DSLRs as they will have paid photographers there. Small compact digital cameras, they don't care about, but with a DSLR they are likely to tell you to put it away or they will confiscate it. But if you are further away, the less likely you are going to be stopped.

And it will be interesting to see the pictures you can get, because I am (hopefully) getting a D40 soon(ish), but it seems as if Alok has gone missing.

Most gigs I go to, they are only stopping peeps with detachable lens cameras ie SLRs. So as above, you may be screwed!
Not really a lot of advice I can give as Ive never done it lol!

You won't regret it. images/smilies/smile.gif I love my D40 and I get angry when I have to use the old compact camera. images/smilies/lol.gif

I'm not a music concert person though so no advice from me.

^ Really? Seems awfully strange. I've taken my compact into all the gigs I've been to, and no-one cares.

You need to go to a proper gig. As long as its a band you like then once it gets going, it is the best moment of your life. I've been to 2 Muse gigs, and seriously, they are insane.

This was a few years ago and may have been a unique experience. I dunno.

I would leave it at home. For one, you won't have to worry about it being confiscated; what if the person who took it decided to keep it for themselves?
Secondly, you won't have to worry about it getting banged around or stolen by retards who are either high or drunk. Or both.
Thirdly, it will be so dark the pictures will come out super crappy and blurred, unless you crank the F stop down to below 5, turn the ISO to max, and shoot at 1/80th of a second. And 55mm is about what you see through your own eyes, so expect everyone on stage to be teeny weeny; you would need at least 135mm of zoom.

Oh that's a shame you can't bring cameras in. I was allowed the last concert I went to and some of the pics turned out quite well.

the d40 has the same sensor as the d70, d100, and d50, but with some updated software. Of course it'll take good pics images/smilies/smile.gif

Well, I brought the camera along, but "security" at the door said I could take it in as long as I'm not caught using it (uhmm...?), so I left it in the trunk of my car. I found out only later that if you're caught once, you only get a warning. Had I known that, I'd have taken it in, been careful, and just stopped if I received a warning. Shucks.

They can't confiscate it. They're rent-a-cops, not government authority. Confiscation would be theft.

Well, that's what I was wondering.

My two cents: Unless you have proper equipment (meaning expensive lenses and pro bodies) and access to the photographers area, I'd just leave the camera gear at home and enjoy the show. Your memories will most probably be better than the few crappy shots you _might_ get images/smilies/smile.gif

Hahaha, missed this thread completely, whoops! images/smilies/lol.gif

I'm with Raparperi - leave the cam at home and have a good time. Concert lighting is the second-worst lighting I've had to deal with and it's extremely demanding on equipment to get it right. With lighting that bad, ISO800 @ f/1.4 is sometimes needed to get a decent exposure. Having to worry about getting kicked out is just another reason that it's just not worth the hassle.
