You ordered IR filter that blocks visible light but lets IR trough? But you most likely have the opposite filter infront of the sensor of your camera, one that blocks IR, because sensor has a broader spectrum response than just visible light, and photos would look wrong.
You can only shoot the very close IR without modifying the camera. Some videocameras (like Sony) have this nightshot mode where the IR-blocking filter is removed, but I haven't heard about photocameras having such modes.

Correct me if I'm wrong people images/smilies/smile.gif

And as a followup 2 example pics I took by removing IR-blocking filter from my webcam with improvised spectrum of a lightbulb.

One with filter in front: http://mxm.iridiumonline.info/ir/spectra-visible.jpg
And one without: http://mxm.iridiumonline.info/ir/spectra-ir.jpg

You can see how much of the IR the filter cuts. If you put a visible light blocking filter over the first picture, you don't get much at all. Maybe with extremely long exposure times, but then noise will be a much bigger issue.

hmm, glad i purchased a used filter for 20 bucks, so even if it goes wrong, It wont be a hand chopped off.

I will be using a Nikon D200, and it can see some infrared rays, like for instance from the remote control....

Remote control is very much near the visible light.
Look, this is response of the CCD sensor:
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/fieldtrips/2005/activities/ir_spectrum/images/lightresponse_s.gif

And remote IR is somewhere near 700-750nm. So yeah, it will see something, but ALOT will be filtered out.

In case you indeed bought an IR-pass and not IR-block filter. I understand there are both kinds. Easy to determin which is which though. One is black other is transparent images/smilies/smile.gif

Sorry Alok, but apparently you can't do much IR photography with the D200:

http://www.naturfotograf.com/D200_rev05IR.html

"You should not do IR with the D200. Simple message, simple remedy: Just don't do it. The camera isn't up to the task. There are so much more satisfying approaches to digital IR than those available with D200."

I believe you can get the camera "operated" where they remove the IR-filter completely, but that makes regular photography with the camera a bit more challenging.

Well, I'd say that makes shooting a bit more challenging images/smilies/smile.gif Well, maybe not if you have like 1-2 lenses...3 or more and either you'd have to get a filter for each lens or circulate one filter around (and get adapters for different size lenses).

A man after my own heart. Nothing beats loading, removing and developing a film in complete darkness !

You just wont get the same IR effect on a digital that you will with real IR film & a red filter ....

That reminds me, I have to pick up some IR film for my Minolta. Been a long time since I've shot IR.
