Default Nikon D700 out on June 30th!

The much awaited Nikon D700 will be out on June 30th!

http://pic.phyrefile.com/a/an/anonymous/2008/06/26/Nikon_D700_rumor-2.jpg

Specs for the D700 include a full-frame 12.1MP CMOS sensor (same as the D3's), and a 51-point AF system, also the same as the D3. ISO range is 200-6400, or 100-25600 extended.

A retailer has confirmed the existence of the Nikon D700, even though Nikon hasn't announced it yet. The claim that: “Nikon will be announcing the new Nikon D700 on Monday 30th June"

I saw the same rumours, the second photo is a chop of the original D300 press release shots. (The other thing that gets me, is that on all these supposed shots, it's got an 18-200 on it. Why advertise a DX lens on an FX camera?)

Either way, I'm hopeful it drops soon.

Those aren't real pictures obviously as Nikon didn't announce it yet.

I would really like to get this, however, at my level, I think a D90 with some quality lenses would be better value for my money. Let's hope the D90 will be coming soon. I read the other day that most places have ran out of the D80. Perhaps the D90 will also be coming on June 30.

Around 3000$ I would think which is very expensive. As I said, a D90 with some good lenses would be better value for most people.

I'm interested in getting a full-frame camera too; I'm used to film cameras, and all of a sudden the smaller sensor cameras totally change the focal length of the lens. For example, I know that a 20mm lens will work for a specific occasion, but after putting mounting the lens on my D40x I notice the lens is no longer a 20mm, but a 30mm!! This totally slows down my work because I have to make conversions in my head first, then change the lens.

Not really, for a full-frame camera with that ISO range and those AF points! It'll directly compete with the Canon 5D's replacement, which I would expect to be a similar price.

And probably no more than 5fps.

Yeah, although I wonder if they'll pull the D300 trick and have it hit 8FPS with the battery grip attached. Also other limitations such as smaller buffer, single CF slot, etc.

Frankly, those are all limitations that would not concern me. If i was a professional sports photographer i would buy the D3 (or any of the Canon pro's). If i was anything else, i would buy the D700.

But since i'm only an amateur hobbyist, a D700 is still hard to justify, but awfully tempting, i mean just look at the images that come out of the D3 with a 24-70 and 85mm lens.....

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...hread=28249958

The depth and character of those images is just pure awesome. Many of them are taken at ISO 3200 which goes to show just how good it is.

Well, now I am glad I am still shooting the D200 and didn't spring for the 300 when it first came out. Tempting.

Very tempting.

The D300 can do 8fps without a grip.

But I really don't think they'll do it. Then it would get into the ballpark of the D3. And then they'd lose buyers of the D3 to the 'D300x'. Sure, they would make money still, as more people would get a full frame model over a DX model, but few corporations see this logic.

Edit: As for the IQ of the D3 on high ISOs, a well regarded Norwegian photography magazine did a comparison, they printed one sample shot at ISO200 and one at ISO1600 at a size I can't remember, but it was rather big. Usefully big.

Yeah, and they didn't see any difference.

However, I am also looking forward to see what Sony can pull out of their sleeves with their new backlit sensors. It offers twice as much useful space on any given sensor, and therefore (in theory) a quite substantial advantage over other manufacturers. Will be interesting.
