Default Portrait Lense

Was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent portrait lense. It's my B'Day coming up so I was thinking of 'suggesting' one images/smilies/tongue.gif I'd guess anything in the region of £100-300 (although £300 would be pushing it hugely!). Ideally I want as lower appature as possible, and I'd probably want to stick to maybe Nikon and Sigma lenses to keep the quality up images/smilies/tongue.gif

My camera is a D70 btw images/smilies/wink.gif

The 50 1.8 is awesome... also look at the 85 1.8 - both nikon of course.

If you come across some extra money, the 70-200 VR would work quite nicely for that purpose as well. images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

for portraits, isn't the aperture one o the most important part? so something like lower than 2.0 is good?

I figure you were an awesome shooter already arosamike so i didn't think you would even ask us that question.

As for me, I've given up on my 50mm f/1.8 because I sort of hvae that range + aperture coverd with my 28-75mm f/2.8 lens.

I'd say if you have a lot of room to shoot, then go for the 85mm. Otherwise, if you have limited space(between you and hte subject) then get the 50mm.

I'm not much of a portrait photog, other than the occasional real-world snapshot, but at least for studio work, don't you want to work with longer zooms, to flatten out the face of the person you're photographing instead of distorting the face with a wide-angle lense?

I think I just like the DOF you can get on even wide angle shots with a portrait. I have a 100-300mm f/4 Sigma EX telephoto which is great for macro work and the obviously sports photography, but I'd like to try out some more stuff with people in images/smilies/tongue.gif I've seen some shots people have taken with portrait lenses which look great images/smilies/smile.gif I would post them up, but it seems the link forum that had them on is refusing to load atm. Here's the link just in case it works for anyone else:

Someone on another forum said he used a wide angle and a portrait lense. I love the effect that the portrait gives with the incredibly detailed forground, but soft focus on the background.
