Rep Power: 13 ![]() | Just a question for anybody out there, and if you have a 350D and could try it for yourself, that'd be awesome: If I set custom function 5 (AF-assist beam) to 1: Does not emit and custom function 9 (Shutter curtain sync) to 1: 2nd-curtain sync, then I would have thought the flash should fire only once, when the shutter closes. However, the flash definitely fires twice. (You might have to set a long-ish shutter speed to be able to notice this) It fires once as soon as I press the shutter button, and once when the shutter closes. I don't think that the first flash shows up in the final photo, but I can't think of any reason why it would fire... any ideas? Sorry, I don't think this post is very well worded, but hopefully somebody can understand what I'm asking an help out. Thanks! |

Car: Pimpmobile Rep Power: 68 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The first flash is for the TTL flash metering, generally called a "preflash." It's when the camera looks at the image for a split second to make the power adjustments to the flash before making the exposure. It actually preflashes a number of imperceptible times, not just once. |

| Back off Nikon wh0re ![]() Second curtain flash is usually known as Rear curtain flash to the Nikon boys, It's a trick I use when doing major slow pans, under 1/15 of a second. As BSC said, the first flash is a preflash to gauge how strong the flash should fire, and the second flash fires exactly before the shutter closes, freezing what ever is in the flash's range, retaining the background blur. It's also handy for night club photos, to help expose the background with wild colours and a clear, crisp foreground subject. Examples speak better than my unthought and unplanned words ... ![]() ![]() EDIT: I'd also leave the AF Emit beam thingy on, its just a green beam that helps the camera focus at night ![]() Last edited by Cosworth; November 2nd, 2006 at 08:03 PM.. | |

He was a drunk Olympus shooter, so I guess I can forgive him. ![]() |

Rep Power: 13 ![]() | Haha, Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm aware what the second curtain sync flash does, and I use it sometimes, but I didn't think of the metering purpose of the preflash. It didn't help that the Canon rep I talked to said that there should definitely only be one flash... Guess they forgot about the preflash too. Anyway, glad that's cleared up, thanks! |

Didn't know the thing about the preflash though. It's quite smart, really ![]()
