I could be annoying here and state that Canon did used to use Nikon lenses (In fact I did but I shall deny this). Nikon doesn't have anything to compare to the 1Ds MkIII so there is no comparison to go by at all. I have never even tried any other manufacturers because I am happy with the camera I have and even though the particular model I have is apparently unforgiving I think I have gotten pretty used to it. It's not the gear you have it's what you do with it really and I think sometimes it's easy to forget. Some people say they need this lens and that lens but they don't really they just need ideas. The grass is always greener on the other side!

One thing I will never forget is that first person that taught me anything about Photography took one of his best ever photographs with a disposable camera. He has done a great deal of publicized work but still really loves this particular shot and has actually exhibited it. Photography is a lot more about your ideas than your technical skill and the gear you are using. Anyway it's pretty late and I'm sure I have ranted about nothing much so I shall stop here. images/smilies/smile.gif

I also considered this move very seriously last summer, but in the end, at the level I am at now, the switch would offer me nothing. Also, it was before the release of the D300, so the 40D was so very tempting (compared to the D200)

However, all my friends shoot with Canons, and time and again something about Canons leave me disappointed (the uselessness of the 5D's AF in low-light, no matter what lens, for example). As far as SLRs go, I really don't think Canons can compare in ergonomics to the Nikon counterparts.

FWIW, my brother is a pro photographer... He switched to Nikon this year, because the D3 outperformed the 1DS mkIII. He didn't know which one he wanted, so he bought both to try out, and after lots of tinkering, the Nikon came out ahead. I played around with both, and I'd reluctantly agree that the Nikon is a better camera currently... He's always been a diehard Canon user, but apparently the Nikon is just better at this time.

This only means that Canon will come up with something that much better in the near future. images/smilies/smile.gif

Yeah it's annoying when some asshat -reps you and doesn't say who he/she is. Same goes for +repping although that's not so bad.

I say screw the honour system, show the name of the -repper to the -reppee

Let's put it this way. There is nothing you can do on a Canon that you cannot do on a Nikon (and vice versa).

I kind of like Nikon more...yes I'm biased.
I did work with a 300D a little. Couldn't figure it out at all!!

To each his own. My 350D fits in my hands just right and feels good. I played around with a D40 the other day and was confused as feck by it.

heh.. that's your problem.

Stick the Nikon 50mm 1.8 on the D3 or D3x when it comes out and stop it down to f/2.8 or so. Then compare that with either the Canon 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 at the same aperture. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the Nikon 50mm 1.8 compared well with the Canon 50mm 1.4 @ 1.8 either. It's a better lens than the older Nikon 50mm 1.4.

Nikon does not have a marketing tool like Canon has with "L". They have just have very good lenses in their higher range. Canon does have a much better selection of high IQ wide, normal, and telephoto (not 200mm+ though) primes. But when it comes to zooms, a proper comparison will normally show that Nikon's high end glass is as good as or better than Canon glass.

What Nikon lenses have you shot with.. and on which bodies? I absolutely love my 80-200 2.8 ED AF D two-ring lens.. and the 70-200 2.8 is better still on DX bodies. My 80-200 produces even better photos on the d300 over the d70. The newer Nikon zooms like the 14-24 and 24-70 are unreal.

Canon also has some awesome glass.. but unless Canon has glass you absolutely need that Nikon doesn't have it's really not very smart to assume Canon has better glass just because there's an "L" to tell you what's cheap and what's not.. or just based on using a nice prime on an $8000 camera vs. an $1800 camera.

Unfortunately, the 50mm is the only lens I used, perhaps I should have tried more, but after reading this thread more, almost all my doubts are gone. images/smilies/wink.gif

lol

yeah.. don't spend too much time worrying about Canon vs. Nikon. They're both at the top of their game right now. Just go buy some good glass and be happy.

There are a few specific reasons to go with Canon over Nikon or Nikon over Canon. Most photographers will never need to worry about those things either images/smilies/smile.gif

Both the 450D and the 40D are better than the 1000D you posted and AFAIK they all cost about the same.

I might be wrong. Canon users?
thats quite a simple one to answer, the 1d is a full frame jobbie where as he D300 isnt is it? if it isnt, then the canon will look better by default just because the photo sites on the CMOS chip are larger. you get better sharpness, better colour etc etc

there was a site i read that explained all the differences between full frame and APS-C sensors.... ill try find it again
