(Aussie TV Show)

| old porsches do run! | I think the difference is in format they are shooting. Movies are 24p (film), and tv is 50i or 60i (digital). Interlaced looks smoother. |

| I think it's got something to do with frame rate... But I'm not entirely sure about it. OT now - I like how Paramount combines their logo animation with the start scene XD

| ^ will bore you to death | I've noticed it watching Top Gear. I just chalked it up to PAL having a higher resolution than NTSC. ![]() |

| is awesome! | I've always wondered about that 'film' look. One place you'll really notice it is when watching NFL highlights. You'll see all these highlights that have a TV look to them (cooler colors, sharper figures) and then highlights that appear movie like. In the case of these highlights, it's because some are filmed by NFL Films who employ 35mm film cameras rather than TV cameras. NFL Films uses so much 35mm film, they're Kodak's largest customer for the film. I also think that a directors cinematographic style will effect the outcome and wether or not it will have that 'movie' look.

| Coppin' a feel | The "film look" you speak of comes from several factors, but I'll focus on the main ones. Let's start with DOF(depth of field). Most films are shot using a much shalower depth of field than is regularly used with TV/Video cameras. This allows for emphasis on the subject being filmed (an often-used cinematic technique where the objects the filmmaker wants to highlight is in focus, where everything else is blurred) and dramaticaly changes the image on the screen had a shallow DOF not been used. Another factor would have to be the viewing angle provided 35mm film lenses. Most films use wide angle lenses for filming, again changing the image drasticaly over more standard lenses. Wide-angle lenses generally cover between 100° and 60°. Normal, or Standard lenses generally cover between 50° and 25°. Finally, there's the film itself. Film tends to give a warmer, more organic feel, as opposed to video footage. Backdraws of film is that it's expensive and requires more skill to use, but the final outcome is, IMO, well worth it.
