I know a photographer named Martin Williams has some very good drawings to explain this.

His page containing these can be found here: http://www.pbase.com/mart_williams/in_box (I wont link them here coz pBase is shit!)

Please DON'T steal these, give him credit!!

without a doubt, ill give credit where credit is due. However ive been told not to use anymore automotive related imagery in my studies, so i may have to reconstruct where needed.

Martin FTW, absolutely awesome guy with proper brains and one of very few people who understands every little technical detail about photography. His little study on TPF has helped me no end with my work !

ive just read a little of thread...

seems like the same problems we have in Paricle Image Velocimetry, you got two cameras viewing a flow. but theyre at an angle to it coz they must be on the same level and of course you cannot then position them in side each other. you need two cameras to grab two pictures within a very very short time. however the perspective needs correcting so we use a sliding lens arrangement or cheaper scheimpflug arrangement to do that. makes it look like your looking dead on and gets rid of any DOF problems too.

damnhawk, if you cant have any more automotive stuff... why not Particle Image Velocimetry techniques? surely that'd be good enough?

its not quite the same since theres two cameras, instead of one, but you can still isolate and examine one camera with half the lens arrangement

they're called sliding lenses, what we use.... the cameras cant look perpendicular to the flow, just like martin cant look perp at the car until its directly infront. using sliding or scheimpflug lenses basically lets you look dead on, but from an angle.

Yeah, in cameras that's called a "tilt-shift" or "perspective control" lenses.
