Default Help with pen tool please

Ok I'm having a slight issue here with Photoshop. The problem is that whenever I go to use the pen tool, I draw my shape and then I want to fill it in, using the 'fill path' option when I right click. However, it fills the entire canvas, except for the shape I actually want to fill. Obviously something is inversely selected*, I just dont know how to change it back...

*When I go to 'make selection' it is actually the entire canvas selected except for the shape I've drawn.

So any whizzes out there who know their shit, your thoughts please.

No idea there... You're probably using Paths, not Shape Layer, right (as in the middle button in the 2nd section of the pen tool toolbar - square with points and the pen tool in the middle)? I use Shape layer (the left icon), so whenever I create a shape, it's saved in its own layer, then i just ctrl+click the thumbnail in the layer list and it's correctly selected. You do end up with 2x as many layers as you would normally, but on the other hand, everything is still saved in vector form.

Yeah I've always been using paths, and I just make the layer a vector afterward. Hrmm, shape layers doesn't really solve my problem, but it's a workable alternative...could even be better in the long run. Thanks images/smilies/smile.gif

Actually, I think i've figured it out anyway. I had 'subtract from selection area' highlighted instead of 'add'. Seems to be normal now.

That was also on my mind, but I rather suggested my own way of working with the pen tool, since it has many advantages over yours. images/smilies/wink.gif

Thanks for that, I had that problem a long time ago and it got fixed but I totally forgot how I did it until now. images/smilies/happy.gif
