Default Illustrator and PS help - keeping a transparent background to an image

i have an image of a man usign a SteadiCam and ive just used the magnetic lasso tool to cut him out and plonk him on a transparent back ground

however, when i go to put this image into my thing in illustrator, it applies a white background to it which is specfically why i cut around him in the first place. i do not want a white background!

how do i get around this

Huh wha, never heard of that. Did you try save for web when trying to save it as a png?

Also if I remember correctly, Illustrator adds a white background to transparent images when they are imported. I can't remember how to get rid of it right now though.

EDIT: Found a forum discussion via google that might be of use to you. Linky

Or does Illustrator allow you to set the transparent colour for the image?

The program is making a new "frame" or "level" to your project. How are you adding it to your project? Copy and paste?
