Now why did I think of Jimmy Buffett when I read this, I should have known that he wasted it all away in Margaritaville. images/smilies/lol.gif

Aren't charitable donations tax deductible?? I dunno, but with the amount of money those guys make they probably pay more in taxes anyway.

Regardles, a very nice thing to do indeed.

edit. Read the amount to be million not billion, so no they probably will not be paying more in taxes... images/smilies/oops.gif

If it were really such a beneficial thing for the philanthropist to do, why isn't it done more?

donations are indeed tax deductable in the US, however, with that kind of amount it negates the value.

techinically he donated stock, not money. Company takes a nosedive, his donation is worthless. Probably not going to happen either way. Too bad so many rich people hoard thier money and leave enough to support many generations at the height of luxury so thier kids turn out to be insane.

I guess this fits the topic, Gates: The Carnegie of our time?
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/busine...nthropy20.html

Oh and BTW, it amazes me how our world enables some individuals to accumulate that much money in their lifetime. (Buffet and Gates are both self-made) One billion dollars is a ridiculous amount of money already and you'll have a hard time spending it, but what these guys on the Forbes' list got is just beyond my comprehension...
Warren Buffet donates 37 billion dollars to charity and still has ~9 billion left. And I'm sure we can all agree that's more than enough, not only for him but for every descendant he'll ever have. It's mind-boggling IMHO.

What also amazes me is how Buffett still resides in the 6,000 square feet home he bought in 1958 for 31,500 USD (it is now valued at 500,000 $) and drives a 2001 Lincoln Town car. images/smilies/wink.gif

Oliver

PS: Did somebody catch Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks) on Lettermann about two weeks ago? I couldn't believe that that's a billionaire I'm watching, he just seemed so down-to-earth and nice. Kudos to him!

With interest rates it is reckoned you can live a very comfortable lifestyle in the UK with £4m in the bank so it's just uncomprehendable having £25b to give away.

Yeah, just with interest alone you could buy lots of cars, a boat, a plane and a mansion each and every month and still have mony left over...

it doesn't really work like that images/smilies/lol.gif you can't just go to your local credit union and say "here's a billion dollars, i'd like to deposit it in my account please". it's impossible to have a billion dollars just sitting there. its called attainable assets. all of those rich people who buy 10 houses and boats and planes are really just investing in themselves; a place to keep your money safe

I know that those people got most of their money in stocks and don't have that kind of money sitting in their bank account.

But since most of these guys are still with their companies which create a lot of revenue, they'll probably still be able to buy all that stuff. images/smilies/tongue.gif

SO basically he didn't give money to anybody. He set aside shares in the worth of 37 billion so that they can be given to the various organizations after he dies... Still, pretty sick to do that. 9 billion left? Fucking hell, 100 million would be enough for everything you could ever want, except having a F1 team, or any other stuff like that...

//just reread my post and thought it was rather negative sounding, which isn't what I intended... images/smilies/wink.gif sick = awesome...

Those who say money can't buy happiness obviously have no money for themselves. Money gives you the freedom to do things that you could otherwise not do.

If these men genuinely did not care for charity then they would invest their money to make even more money. That is what entrepreneurs do.

good way of thinking images/smilies/thumbup.gif
my parents have the same thinking, they never like people who inherit wealth. When I come out to work, they said don't expect huge chunks of money when they die. All they will make sure is I am safe, as in I get a decent house to live in, a good enough car to get to and from whereever I want, if I need money to start a business I will get that money and from then on, they expect me to build my own future, not have money laid down for me.

Some of my friends said that was crazy, but I disagree, I think it is an excellent way of thinking. I don't understand why they have to give all their money to their kids who are spoiled and then blow all their life savings in like 2 years and still end up with nothing.
