Somebody needs to check his liberal bias at the door. There is an objective discussion to be had about Sen. McCain's military record, but you've just demonstrated you cannot be a part of it.

What "liberal bias"? I've served under officers like him, I've also served under great officers I'd love to work with again in the real world. The fact of the matter is that he was a sub-standard officer who rode his family name to everything it would bring him.

^Oh my God, It's Rolling Stone magazine. And it's Tim Dickinson, he's as biased to the left, as fifth grader to snow days. His last name says it all really. I enjoy reading Rolling Stone from time to time, but for the music, the political section is pure garbage, ill-informed assumptions and lies.

He really is scum, attacking him for the Forrestal Fire, where 134 people died. Sorry smoke-innhalated, shrapnel ridden McCain didn't stay and fight the fire with the FIRE FIGHTERS. Then saying he should have broken off formation for a bombing run, where he was shot down? Anyone who's read anything about the Air Force or warplanes knows you don't break away from your fellow pilots on a bombing run, you can't even juke to avoid fire, low and fast then get the hell out, you don't leave the group.

It's just a bunch of lies. I'd really love to see Tim Dickinson in a plane with 22 SAMs all playing follow the leader with him.

You guys need to lay off the bias argument. This is a political discussion, you're fooling yourself if you think you can check your bias the door. Not possible.

jasonof2000 never even brought up left vs. right, liberal vs. conservative or Republican vs. Democrat. What are you smoking?

It's a plain fact that if you crash a single plane in the air force, you're 90% likely to be on the ground for the rest of your career. McCain dumped four. One during training, which he stalled out in. One in spain, where he deviated from flightplan in a fighter and flew it through power lines. One in Virginia, where he stalled out again (coming back from the army-navy football game in Philly) and then when he was shot down in Hanoi. This doesn't include the plane that he was in when his carrier blew up, which was a fluke and not his fault. Nor was the A4 crash in Hanoi his fault. The other three were entirely his fault, due to him ignoring flight training or flight plans. The fact that he was allowed to keep flying attests to the fact that he used his clout to within an inch of his life.

I know that it's a very liberal-leaning story, but at least read it before trashing it out of hand.

If it's a plain fact perhaps you can provide some evidence. I see no logical reason why the Air Force should dump a competent pilot and his $1million in training because he crashed, without consideration of circumstances.

Since when does being able to fly planes have anything to do with being president? I fail to see the connection there.

I'd believe the words of Navy Commander Phillip Butler over yours. He was one of McCain's peers, who also spent 8 years in the Hanoi Hilton, during the Vietnam War. He was released a month before McCain. Anyways, by the end of his career, he ranked McCain and he's been quoted as saying, "In the Navy, if you crashed one airplane, nine times out of ten you would lose your wings." Referring to McCain's Spain Powerlines incident, he called it "a small international incident" and said that had anyone besides McCain done that, they would've "found themselves as the deck officer on a destroyer someplace in a hurry."

Er, it is to do with character not the physical ability to be a Navy Pilot. The criticism, as I understand it, is that he accepted his families influence to aid him in his chosen career and such an act is detrimental to his abilities concerning running a country.

The critism, as I understand it, of Obama is that he is a Muslim Terrorist - patently absurd, or that he was on a charity committee with a man who once a very long time ago so disliked the Vietnam war decided to plant some bombs to destroy property and by implication Obama 'condoned' his actions he was on the same committee after all - it is again about character/judgement.

Well sorry but in the crap mud slinging contest the Republicans have won the prize - ta da. That is not a good thing.

^Funnily enough, 'Joe the plumber' wouldn't be affected by Obama's tax plan at the moment as he doesn't earn enough, and he owes $1,200 in back taxes already.

Colin Powell endorses Obama, shortly after making a muppet of himself by dancing onstage at an Africa Rising concert. One day, politicians will learn not to dance.

The point I was trying to make about that video is how elloquently he explained it and how he actually took the time to have a man to man talk with "Joe the plumber".

Well, the last 8 years have proven my point, I'd say. May be too big a generalization, but it does give a person a good deal of credibility and intelligence. I, for one, would certainly rather vote for someone that explained their point elloquently to me than someone who winks at me a lot and can't even pronounce the word nuclear, if it came down to that point.

It doesn't, necessarily, but it's a nice quality to have.

Consider the bar test.

Imagine you walk into a bar, and you see one of the Presidential candidates sat there, with a beer or a Coke (depending on whether they drink or not).

Would you enjoy having a general conversation with them?

I get the impression - from what I've seen on the TV - that I would enjoy chatting with either Obama or McCain, whereas I'd be frustrated by Bush within 5 minutes.

In the grand scheme of things, is the bar test important? No, course not. It's a silly thing. But it does suggest how 'likeable' a candidate is, and people are more likely to vote for people they like.

Yeah, she's not bad at all. Especially when you consider other female politicians are often pretty unattractive.

Here's some pictorial proof:

But fuck, I cannot wait for the election to be over. I'm seriously going in-sane after all this time.
