This is a church along I-75 between Dayton and Cincinnati. I've heard their giant statue cost about $250,000. The last time I saw it I was riding along with another MVLRS member who works at a Christian radio station and he said something to the effect of "That money could have made a lot of peoples lives a lot better". I couldn't agree more. He sounded genuinely disgusted about how they spent that money. He also said the guy who runs that church reminds him of a used car salesman.
Sorry to be tardy to the party, but I needed to put emphasis on Kajun's point here.

Wow! If there wasn't the organ in that pic, I would've thought that it's some kind of a Chinese Communist party congress or something. It seems to me that due to the lack of a dictatorship in the history of the US, some people just feel a need to obtain their brainwasing from a non-governmental institution.

I have not the words to express my rage. Self righteous, pompous, sanctimonious assholes like this are the reason my father isn't alive today. These goddammed hypocrites are fine taking antibiotics, insulin, having surgery, and taking advantage of medical breakthroughs that have their roots in the illegal human dissections of the renaissance - a practice the Catholic Church condemned. Now they use that very medicine to artificially prolong life, because medical knowledge is "God's gift" or some shit. Bullshit. According to them all medical knowledge came from sinful and ungodly acts. At the same time they artificially prolong life they condemn any kind of birth control as being "against god's will." WHAT? It's ok to use medical practices based on sin to artificially manipulate life, but it's not ok to protect yourself from disease or unwanted pregnancy by using a simple bit of vulcanized latex?

Fuck them all, I hope they all suffer disease and injury that can be cured by the very science they are trying to destroy - I want them to spend years of suffering as they hear the doctors around them lament, "If only Stem Cell research had been allowed to progress...." "Stem Cell research shows such promise, but politicians and churches keep fighting it.." Let the suffer a long time so they can think about how many people they hurt, how many lives could have been saved, how many families could have had their father, mother, son, or daughter alive and well; how many people that could have walked again, or gotten of dialysis.

Let them all experience the full magnitude of the preventable suffering they have caused.

How the hell is being obscenely wealthy a sin? Just look at Richard Branson, he's a billionaire but he seems like a nice guy.

I do agree, look at Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, both are fabulously wealthy and have dedicated a huge chunk of cash to charities.

The Catholic Church doesn't know what to do with itself, instead of enacting worthwhile reforms, like allowing clergy to marry and allowing contraception, they instead waste their time on this crap.

Richard Branson looks a little wacked out to me. Anytime I see an interview with him I think his reactions and demeanor are a little unhuman, lol. If I didn't know who he was I'd label him a quack.

It's more or less against the teachings of Jesus. Jesus thought all that money could better serve the poor, iirc he said something like, "It's easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to walk through the gates of heaven."

Of course the hypocrisy in this is that the Catholic church is obscenely wealthy.

To clarify this. He isn't actually talking about the eye of an actual needle, but a gate in the jerusalem city wall. It was very low so the camel would have to bend down to get through it and it was very difficult.

Why is it that the catholic church always likes to stop us from making progress?

I've never been able to believe in the church because their vision of god is too corrupted. I have serious doubts about a supposedly "all loving" god that only listens to prays in one language from one institution. In fact, god will burn us all in hell unless we go to church every sunday and donate money towards the building of ridiculously expensive and grand churches.

The church, to me, has always been about controlling the masses, separating a small group of elites from the common people and denying them any basic human desires.

Yeah but you know what, churches everywhere go against the teachings of the Jeezy. Hell my old church, a little shit church on the side of the mountain in Scranton with a congregation of only about 300 families, did some really shitty stuff.

They'd have these "Night at The Races" parties several times a year in which people would buy tickets to watch prerecorded horse races and bet on which horse would win. Food was served, but patrons were allowed and ENCOURAGED to bring their own beer, wine, liquor... whatever they wanted, to keep at their table. All this sounds fine and dandy except for the fact that it all took place in the hall in the church's basement. I only went to one after I turned 21 (long after I had stopped believing) and the whole time I sat there I couldn't believe the amount of pride, huge amounts of gluttony, envy, and sloth that were taking place. Somehow the tale of Jesus going Ape-shit in the Temple had gone over these people's heads. I even asked my mother about it and she just flapped her hand in mid are and said "Oh, they had to call the Chancery to get it approved... I know what you're thinking, just go with it."....

....UHHHHHH, WAT?

This whole experience perpetrated my idea that to most adults, like my parents and neighbours, church only exists not to be a way of salvation and increasing faith, but as a social club. As we grow up we have things like school, clubs, extracurricular activities, sports and even just the mall to meet friends and be social. As we age however, we lose those things and to many adults work is the only way to be with others than your family. Many then join, or a lured, to a church community because 1.) It's free 2.) Everyone is accepting of you and 3.) They are incredibly easy to fit in with.

Do I think my parents believe in Christianity? Yes. Do they go to church for the reasons they should? Absolutely not.

/I told my mother about these "New Seven Deadly Sins" and her response was that she didn't believe it.
