Default Few thoughts on Imus.

Alright....this has been all over the news.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070412/...ace_imus_dc_37

Don Imus has been on the air for decades. He recently got the axe from CBS and MSNBC for comments made regarding the Rutgers female basketball team. He referred to them as "Nappy headed hos"...he has been apologizing over and over.

My thoughts....

He made a comment in poor taste, but not out of malice. So i'm not even sure he really should have apologized (well, maybe only to the women at Rutgers).

But it's not a free speech issue. As long as the government (like the FCC) stays out of this and lets the corporations deal with it. If the corporations think they'll lose money keeping him on the air, then they are obligated (by the shareholders if nobody else) to take him off.

He got fired for that? I would think that a public apology would suffice.

I think the whole problem would have been averted had the term "nappy-headed" had the necessary hyphen when it was transcribed. The omission of this puntuation is just irresponsible.

Well, wasn't that the issue all along?? Pfff... "shock-jocks" and their atrocious grammer.

Not at all. They can chose to keep him on the air even if he doesn't make money, as an example that the network won't be bullied around. I'd angle it towards free speech no matter what people said.

As a matter of principle? Highly unlikely, especially considering the circumstances. They'd much rather distance themselves from such remarks than embrace them (Which is what they'd be accused of doing if they didn't can him and made a case for him to stay). Which would make them lose even more money because sponsors would be pulling out even faster, and from other broadcasts.

This is most definitely going to lead to greater self-censorship. Which would be bad, of course. But it still doesn't fall under freedom of speech, because the government isn't the one that's regulating it. I believe the FCC has already said they won't be doing anything because it's protected.

On the one hand I hate these idiots like Bill O'Reilly, but on the other hand I'm tired of this PC stuff already. He said some derogatory stuff about a bunch of lesbos, who cares?

I think the real people to blame here are the media and Jessie Jackson. As for the team, oh noes, someone made fun of you. He best be fired. images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

This has nothing to do with race and the fact that everyone is making it out to be sickens me.

So, what do you think about the jiggaboo comment that was made right after Imus' comment?

Fired before he can finish his 18th, long scheduled, charity radio-thon. All because of the biggest bigot and racist the Rev Al Sharpens teeth on anything that involves black white relations. Tawana Brawley comes to mind and so does the Duke Lax players Scandal where the race card jumps out of the deck and onto the pile of shit that is worlds pc love. If Imus had said "look at these fatheaded geeks, all fighting to see who gets powned at the next study hall" referring to a chess championship. Well i just don't see mensa marching up and down the street.

Firing him was extreme. Seems that if anyone says anything nowdays regarding someones racial differences (which this case was not) Sharpton himself pulls the lever when your head is on the chopping block. Who is really keeping racism alive today? Imus? I think not.

What he said was just stupid, but I don't think he should have lost his job over it. Sharpton and Jackson made a media circus out of it and got the guy fired.
