Default Inaccuracies in Albert Gore's movie.

A judge in the United Kingdom has deemed that there are eleven mistakes in Albert Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth. Such as:

* The film claims that melting snows on Mount Kilimanjaro evidence global warming. The Government’s expert was forced to concede that this is not correct.

* The film suggests that evidence from ice cores proves that rising CO2 causes temperature increases over 650,000 years. The Court found that the film was misleading: over that period the rises in CO2 lagged behind the temperature rises by 800-2000 years.

* The film uses emotive images of Hurricane Katrina and suggests that this has been caused by global warming. The Government’s expert had to accept that it was “not possible” to attribute one-off events to global warming.

* The film shows the drying up of Lake Chad and claims that this was caused by global warming. The Government’s expert had to accept that this was not the case.

* The film claims that a study showed that polar bears had drowned due to disappearing arctic ice. It turned out that Mr Gore had misread the study: in fact four polar bears drowned and this was because of a particularly violent storm.

* The film threatens that global warming could stop the Gulf Stream throwing Europe into an ice age: the Claimant’s evidence was that this was a scientific impossibility.

* The film blames global warming for species losses including coral reef bleaching. The Government could not find any evidence to support this claim.

* The film suggests that the Greenland ice covering could melt causing sea levels to rise dangerously. The evidence is that Greenland will not melt for millennia.

* The film suggests that the Antarctic ice covering is melting, the evidence was that it is in fact increasing.

* The film suggests that sea levels could rise by 7m causing the displacement of millions of people. In fact the evidence is that sea levels are expected to rise by about 40cm over the next hundred years and that there is no such threat of massive migration.

* The film claims that rising sea levels has caused the evacuation of certain Pacific islands to New Zealand. The Government are unable to substantiate this and the Court observed that this appears to be a false claim.

You'll get scientists/researches that will claim one thing, others something else. It's a back and forth and we won't see any definitive answers. Isn't that the scientific method?

Al Gore's movie contains inaccuracies thus global warming is a myth?

Never mind me If that's not what you meant.

I hate the people that use this movie has their foundation to assault me for calling global warming shit, even though I've done hundreds of hours of study into it.

Read what he says, it's not a myth, it's that the problems it will create are not as significant as the eco nuts like to claim.

Not to mention the studies were of a very specific group of Polar Bears. Their numbers are going down, but thats because they are moving to harder to monitor locations. Also Canada allows for the hunting of roughly 300-500 a year. Want to save the polar bears? Reduce the numbers allowed to be hunted.

Quote:
* The film suggests that the Greenland ice covering could melt causing sea levels to rise dangerously. The evidence is that Greenland will not melt for millennia.
He used rather interesting choice of words he said "models show if Greenlands ice shelf melted..." And that statement is true, but it's "IF" that was missed. It's impossible for that much ice to melt and break off.

Quote:
* The film suggests that the Antarctic ice covering is melting, the evidence was that it is in fact increasing.
The Antarctic ice is melting... the ice in the bay he talked about. It's in the farthest northern tip. What he neglected to mention that it is melting off and returning as rain over Antartica's land mass. Essentially causing the LOWERING of the sea levels.

Quote:
* The film suggests that sea levels could rise by 7m causing the displacement of millions of people. In fact the evidence is that sea levels are expected to rise by about 40cm over the next hundred years and that there is no such threat of massive migration.
And in the previous 100 years the seas have risen about the same. Whats interesting is that while the sea levels have risen, Places like Manhattan have GAINED land mass.

Also models suggest that the earth will heat up roughly 4.5F degrees. Global Warming only affects night summer temperatures. With the rising temperature, much more of the arctic north becomes far more usable land. The melting glaciers in the Himalaya's lead to more usable fresh water for the land and it's inhabitants below, which means they can cultivate and make money that can be used to put in dams and other water storage designs to allow for continued farming.

The money that would have been dumped into Kyoto protocol (which BTW, no one is keeping up with their promise) could be much better used to reduce/eradicate diseases (such as Malaria) and hunger. The latter could be significantly helped with countries reduced subsidies allowing poorer countries to compete better on the world market.

You happen to watch the movie? Notice how he was driving around in a Cadillac, and flying on a private jet (or at worst first class) all over the place? Anytime he had to talk to someone who knew what they were doing, he had to take a flight to visit them. I guess he never heard of a fucking phone. The teacher he claims that got him into environmentalism didn't teach him hardly anything, as he barely passed the guys class with a C-.

If the Canadian Department of Wildlife is anything like our DOW, those hunting numbers are well within sustainable limits for the bear population.

ZOMG! A politician bending the truth? Twisting the facts to his own purposes? That never happens images/smilies/tongue.gif. Seriously though, it makes me mad that Gore (or anyone) would twist facts like this. Sure the earth is warming up, but it's not going to destroy the world. It's happened before, and we'll manage.

Apparently it is only nine errors, for one.

However, the point of the court case - that a school governor was trying to ban the film from being shown in schools - well, this failed. And the film is being given to all schools across the UK (with the nine errors being pointed out by the teacher).

More to the point; does that mean everything else in the film is true? Disclaimer : I have not seen the film (although I keep meaning to) and am presuming these nine errors are not the entire crux of Gore's argument

Besides his errors/interesting choice of words, it's not horrible. The problem is half the film is his normal speech he gives at universities, and the other half is about him "coming to terms" with the possibility that summer may be 3 degrees Fahrenheit hotter in 75 years.

Basically the film feels like it was designed by his PR guy to make him seem more like an actual human being rather than a mindless drone with no emotion that he has a reputation for.

I've seen this movie just last week and it was really good. I am disappointed with Al Gore because I did believe what he was talking about. I am actually glad that, although global warming is happening, it is going at a much slower rate than Al Gore made you to believe.

worse than those few mistakes is only the media bias in certain parts of the world...

even if a couple of aspects are exaggerated the film is still correct for the largest part.
we've already destroyed a huge part of this planet, we've already extincted enough species, we're destroying our own bloody living space. at least there a few people like gore who speak up against that.

thats obviously a really lame argument, typical of the ridiculousness of the criticism towards gore's film.
