I'm conflicted about this. If a child was acting out in such a manner, school officials have their hands tied....because if they touch the child in any way they will be sued for abuse. But then arresting a 6 year old seems kind of excessive.
If true, parents fault.

Omg! Scratches and kicks from a 6-year old Any teacher that can't stop a little girl from hurting them shouldn't be teaching. Though this would probably teach the girl to behave in the future, its on the excessive side.

I'll concede that a full-on arrest with handcuffing is a little much, but I can completely see the teacher not stopping the child. These days, teachers open themselves up to all manner of trouble (lawsuits, firings) for laying a finger on a student, for any reason. Obviously, it's not that a teacher isn't physically able deal with someone, it's the pandora's box they open if they do.

A teacher at Spearsville High School in Louisiana said two fifth-graders had sex on a classroom floor while two others fondled each other in the classroom.

Union Parish Superintendent Judy Mabry would say only that the allegations are being investigated. Principal Frank Futch said the incident was not indicative of how the school is run.

First-year teacher Michael Walker, who teaches fifth- through eighth-grade English, said three students were either expelled or sent to an alternative school and two others got detention.

So 4 students were involved in the incident, but there were 5 punishments.

Sadly enough, the first thing I thought was that this could be an interesting combinatorics problem.

I'm surprised they didn't taser her, because they've been a little trigger happy with those over here. Even on kids (the one was 6 years old too, and was using a shard of glass threatening to cut himself...or something).

Wow, just wow. Maybe taking the 6 year old to the station wasn't a bad idea, but actually cuffing her might have been a bit much. The 5th grader thing is just messed up, but it sounds like that school isn't exactly a model school. I think all this comes back to the kids home life.

If you don't have the ability to instill fear into the children without touching them, you're not fit to be a teacher.

This was in highschool, admitedly, but practically the same. We were the roughest, toughest class in our school (around 1000 pupils). We wouldn't show up for class, we played cards in the back, drank, the lot, but in physics class, everybody showed up EVERY time and everybody kept their mouth fucking shut untill they were spoken to. The teacher treated us good, never unfair, but we knew to fucking behave. At times, he'd just read a newspaper or look at the window for 15 minutes at the beginning of class, and we'd just sit there quietly and wait.

Now THAT's a teacher.

When a police officer can't handle a six year old girl in a better way than to arrest her, that police officer should not be a police officer.

You've got a point. I could see the parents getting very upset over a teacher manhandling their kid. In that case, a trip to a police station in the back of a police car would surely calm the kid down.

Sad, really sad. Kids behavig badly is sad enough, but the police arresting a 6-year old? How does that happen? "But the Crayon down, and lay flat on the floor"- yelled with the Finger on the trigger? The Officers Knee in the back and the Arms forcefully pulled back?

I mean ... Handcuffs on a 6 year old girl ... is that really nessasary? Can´t you take a little girl to the station without the Handcuffs?

Best teacher I ever had was in year 10 (so we were all 15/16y.o)

We were a bunch of shit heads in this English class so the first class of the year all the teacher did was come in, put his books down and write "SEX" on the board. We all shut up. He then spoke to us. "Now that I have your attention I'm going to tell you the only rule I have. You will only speak when spoken to or if you raise your hand. If you mis-behave, I will refuse to teach you. There is no negotiation on this matter."

We shut up, learnt and I got my best ever grade for English.

That is one type of learning, I have experienced just that, and it does work. But hard line discipline can work out the other way around, with students becomming hostile. I've experienced that too.

And to comment on KaJuN's post. I really am suprised at how much police officers can get away with, in all countries. It seems to me, that there is a hard line bunch in all countries that think that police will never hit someone with their batons, will never kick someone, and never abuse someone, without good, proper and justified reason. Never. Who are these people?

I agree that there are people who need a good beat down from the police. But it's the ones who get it and don't deserve it that upset me. There is a difference between using force to subdue someone and using it just because you're a little pissed off.

Some of these schools are breeding grounds for criminals. This incident doesn't help, but these kids need to be shown how to act in society.
