Default Kosovo. Can it be an example for other separationists?

Now that the former Yugoslavian province of Kosovo has declared its independence, will other separationists go that way and demand it?

And do you agree with the declaration of independence of the state? I don't, and certainly Romania is one of the states which will not recognize the new state. Because that might give an example here to Hungarian radical politicians that want autonomy/independence/fusion with hungary of the Harghita-Covasna area.

I read that at least 15 EU countries and USA are going to accept independence of Kosovo.
It already is an exemple for Ossetia and Abkhazia, they want independence from Russia.

I'm personally a bit mixed if its a good idea, On one side its what the majority want, but it is better for the rest of the region to have Kosovo independent. It is a worry it'll make every wannabe state be independent, Which could mean we have a lot of mini-states, personally I don't think this would be good

There is actually a movement here in Cornwall (South West England, lovely place if you like cow shit and inbreeding) to make that an independent country, I guess this is just going to motivate them. Personally I think Kosovo could be quite good as an independent state provided there no violence like there has been there.

I really don't know that much about what happened in Kosovo, I was quite young when it all kicked off

Every area in the industrialized western nations has some sort of independence move. There's one for my city, my county, and even my half of the state.images/smilies/dunno.gif They're all nutters, so meh.

Does anyone wanna throw up a link to some information on the Ethnic battles faced by the region? I'm not too familiar with all the ethnic groups and their unique attitudes and positions.

I'm all for Kosovo's independence. There's been trouble around that area for a while, and I hope that this move wil increase stability in the region (although I fear it might not).

And on a purely selfish note, hopefully it'll persuade my fellow Scots that we too can go it alone. (Although that's an entirely different debate in itself)

It doesn't matter anyway; the European Union will eventually make all the countries into states, instead of individual sovereignty's. I foresee "The United States of Europe."

I'm up in Snohomish county. The city I'm in had a small movement a few years back. Then the county has one that comes up every few years by some of the nuts who live on a lake here. I don't remember the name or details, but it involves rainbows, Boeing, and gun control. And then every few years someone gets in the press about separating the West from the East. Sometimes it's about two separate states, sometimes it's about whole nations.

You have a point, whenever I say that I think "Oh wait, um, who's going to replace them?". We've got to the stage where we have a multi-party system full of parties that are shit.

I'm guessing by your location you've decided to up sticks and leave like I hope to do soon, seems like the best idea

Back on topic, I'm question how well this Kosovo independences will work out for the region, there is already violence at the borders, but it does appear to be what the majority want, and that's democracy for you - You've just gotta love it!

In general, I think if the majority of people want independence, then I don't see a problem with it.

Well I spent most of the last 14 years in Pouslbo, and am going to school up here in Bellingham.

For those who don't understand the Stargate reference, whenever they need to go to a desert like world they head down to Eastern Washington, which is essentially the opposite of Western Washington climatically and politically.

I agree with that completly, but there is another worry that this independence leads just to annexation to Albania. And becouse the independence was declard probably too soon it might again lead to bloodshed in the region. Serbs wont take that lightly and albanians wont be subtle.

Well, now, this has really incited the fanatical Hungarians around here. There was a leaflet stuck to one of the pillars at our high school's entrance, calling all Hungarian students to a march to support the request for autonomy of this area:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sz%C3%A9kely_Land
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungari...onomous_Region
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sz%C3%A...my_initiatives

It has become a matter of national security.

More protests are scheduled in different cities.
