Obama: "Labor unions part of the solution, not part of the problem."

Just heard this from Obama while watching the morning news.

"Labor unions are part of the solution, not part of the problem."

    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...FdYNw&refer=us

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama said the state of the U.S. economy is “a continuing disaster” for families and said urgent action is needed to revive growth.
The president cited a Commerce Department report showing the economy shrank 3.8 percent at an annual pace in the last three months of 2008 as he said Vice President Joe Biden will head an expanded task force that will come up with policies to help middle-income Americans.
“The recession is deepening and the urgency of our economic crisis is growing,” he said at a White House ceremony.
Obama also said he would reverse former President George W. Bush’s policies by signing three executive orders to strengthen the ability of unions to organize workers.
“We have to reverse many of the policies toward organized labor,” he said. “I do not view the labor movement as part of the problem.”
I'm thinking of the UAW while I read that. Any thoughts?

Is it me, or is there much more talk about the actions of the president of the USA since Obama has taken over?

Also, why is this in the automotive forum?

Nope, this is payback for the $400 MILLION the unions spent to get Obama elected.

Just another example of how Obama is just a bad idea - we need LESS American unions, not more. Here comes the "card check" idiocy.

It's the truth, so of course I must agree. Everyone need to make concessions in this time, this applies to the unions too, just as much as it applies to the non-unionized personel.

^ I thought it was a new tape from Osama on the state of the US labour unions.

This, and the protectionist measures in Obama's economic stimulus are enough screwups for the first few weeks me thinks.

If you knew the answer, why did you even have a question?

Even if there weren't any contributions or "parallel electioneering" going on, the Democrats (including Obama) are so far in hock to the unions, it's not even funny. Check out the "card check" legislation that they're going to ram down our throats, since union membership is now below 7% of the American population.

I don't like labour unions at all. I once was part of a large one because I pretty much had to with the job I had, but all they did was take my money (quite a lot I might add) and get on my nerves. But unfortunately, since many large companies are greedy and reckless, they sometimes are useful.

I don't want to condone the things I read on this forum about the UAW and the like, yet, I don't see a big problem with involving the unions into rebuilding financial growth for the working class. The German government is constantly accused (and rightly so) for ignoring the working man and only caring about the global players. Obama seems to want to do the opposite, which does not only involve said working man, but also his organisations, such as unions. I rather see a union being involed in the process, since it "softens" their role as the David fighting the big evil company Goliath.

Therefore, I don't think this is as much of a problem as many of you make it look. We don't even know what Obamas course exactly means, so how can you know it is so wrong?

Maybe there are some fundamental differences between unions on our continent and unions in the US of A.

I don't disagree with you, but who's to say that the policies in question weren't put in place by the previous President because corporation X, Y and Z helped him get elected?

If anything, this reeks of politics as usual. Didn't Illinois just dump their governor for such quid pro quo?

What small man? If you mean someone like you or I, how does the United Auto Workers existing help me out? If you mean someone belonging to the United Auto Workers, how is the United Auto Workers helping them out at this point? Or, phrased differently, how is the United Auto Workers going to help us get out of this mess?

The UAW is an institution that "fights" for their members. For the average member, they are an institution representing his interests against the companies. When Obama says that he wants to involve Joe Average as well as his union in the process of saving him from the mess others made, he simply wants to get all the parties to the table. Otherwise, the word of Joe Average might mean squat when his union is left out and therefore tries to pull Joe back to the opposing side. He simply wants to get all of them to the table.

Kinda "no child is left behind", if you catch my drift...

So democrats are in it to help the big unions, republicans are in it to help big business.

Sounds like either way I'm fucked.
