That's what I was thinking of. People turned it into an excuse to tear stuff up. Weren't there riots in France over the government wanting to change legislation so people could actually get fired? I know later ones were over race/religion issues (supposedly), but I still see no need for a riot in any of those situations.

Compare it to what would happen if the US government seriously debated, and I'm talking SERIOUSLY, like, "we are going to do this", banning handguns and cars that gets fuel consumption worse than 35 mpg.

Does the French (equivalent of a) Constitition say the French laborers have a right not to be fired?

Keep in mind the right behind freedom of speech is our right to bear arms in the US. Banning guns is not just a matter of banning a dangerous weapon (with an idiot holding it anyway) it would have far reaching consequences in the US.
