Default Refusing medica treatment after a crash? Don't taze me, bro!

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/loc...,4167012.story

Quote:
Sheriff's deputies zapped a car accident victim with a stun gun several times Friday morning after he became violent with emergency workers who tried to put a neck brace on him, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 3:30 a.m. when the man, Mark Holder, 30, of Boynton Beach had a seizure in the Cadillac he was driving along Military Trail and Champion Drive, and his passenger, NeNe Piltoff, 47, of Delray Beach, had to take the wheel, sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.

The car jumped the median heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Military Trail before it swerved off the road and smashed into the Addison Court plaza sign.

As fire-rescue workers tried to put a neck brace on Holder, he fought them, Barbera said.

After he was subdued, he was taken to Delray Medical Center with serious injuries, Barbera said. Piltoff suffered a dislocated elbow.

The more of these stories I hear, the more I think tazers are a bad idea. They're being misused and abused.

I mean, tazing a man multiple times, after he had a seizure and was involved in a car accident? The police might as well have shot him with a glock.

Not sure what to think on this one. He did have serious injuries, so he needed medical treatment. There is no logical reason to refuse, so maybe he just wasn't in the right frame of mind. If that's the case, then they acted correctly. It would have been negligent to do otherwise.

I'd have to agree. Tazers are supposed to be less lethal alternatives to guns. Does that mean if the officer didn't have the tazer he would have shot the man? Some uses of them are justified but I get the sense that the vast majority of tazer use is just to make the officer's job a little bit easier. If you don't feel like dealing with rowdy people then you have no business being a police officer, IMO.

^ Exactly where ever you are law enforcement will use what ever tools and laws that make their life easy. So you point on the Tazer, my point made elsewhere about the 42 days detention - they are not used in the way it was intended (or will not be in the case of the 42 days debacle) by the law makers, its only human nature really.

I'm sure it's also not that uncommon for hospitals to use straps or injections to pacify people as well.

Seizure leading to an accident, then gets violent with rescue personnel: sounds like the opening to an episode of House. I wonder if there was a medical reason for his tantrum rather than just simple stupidity. In that case, they should've just sedated him, if they had the drugs on hand.

Correct. That is the accepted practice.

I'm sure that having just experienced a seizure, followed by a car accident the patient would have been in shock and confused. The officers could have helped restrain the patient while he was sedated or strapped by the medical staff but instead they chose to put large amounts of voltage through him.

I can accept that, if it were possible. No surprise this happened in Florida, where the "don't taze me bro" incident took place...and where children have been tasered on numerous occasions as well.

It tazer or nightstick action. In most cases the tazer is the better option.

I'm wondering if he had health insurance? Maybe that's why he refused treatment?

Thats all well and good, but the problem is that some law enforcement officers get pissed off a little too easily.

So play along and dont piss them off! If I get pulled over and starting yelling at the pig to get the fuck out of my face, then broken bones should pretty much be expected. (exhaggeration, but it gets the point across)
