Romanian presidential election, 2009... well, there are a few ROs around, right?

4 weeks to the presidential elections. So far, 5 confirmed candidates (Băsescu-the incumbent, Geoană, Crin Antonescu, Oprescu and Kelemen)... and I don't plan on voting either of these five. If there's an independent with very low odds, I'm planning on voting for that one just not to give my vote to the bigwigs.

Also, there's a referendum to reduce the number of MPs to 300 and the Parliament to a single chamber. It would be a good idea... if it hadn't been launched to cover up the failures of the current regime by giving the sheepish masses something to jump on. It's just a political move by Băsescu himself.

If you've got an opinion on this, post away. I'm looking for a bit of a debate.

Băsescu - Democrat-Liberal Party (PD-L, formed originally from PD and a faction of the Liberal Party)

Geoană - Social-Democrat Party (PSD)

Antonescu - National Liberal Party (PNL)

Oprescu - independent, currently the Mayor of Bucharest, formerly in PSD

Kelemen - representing the Hungarian minorities

Policies? Pretty much for all of them... steal as much as possible for your group of interest under the cover of legitimate democratic regime, and build up a small fortune by the time your term is over.

No, seriously, they all pretend to follow a certain policy each, but it's all words. All hot air.

^ Pretty much just as the others, doctrinary only in name. What they all actually do once they get into power is a botched blend of every kind of political doctrine that's out there.

Man, I honestly haven't been following this election. My Ro passport expired and I can't vote without a valid one. Also, too much school work and couldn't be bothered to upgrade it on time. So I'm sitting this election out.

As far as I'm concerned some of the political power of Romania has been taken away and given to the European Union when it joined and I can't wait for Romania to join the Eurozone so the economy will not have to depend on the political big wigs of the country.

Every other country in Europe is complaining how some of the sovereignty of their country has gone since they joined the EU, but for Romania I think this may be the best thing that's happened to it in a long time. The Romanian people were never good at picking their leaders, not even in Thracian times. Herodotus had it right about the Getae. We're the best of a pile of rubish.

Ceauşescu did some good without stepping out of CP line for the first 4-5 years, but then, once he went to visit North Korea... And once he decided to repay the whole national debt in full...

Yeah, he did good stuff speaking up against the SU, but the Romanian form of the North Korean stalinism was pretty bad. There's a reason why he was the only communist leader who really payed after the cold war.

Okay, damn. I said I wasn't going to vote for any of the bigwigs or nutters or Hungarian separationists, but this leaves me with four choices, two of which are independents which I know nothing about, and the other two are from green(-ish) parties.

Just a random thought: Besides the banners, posters and stuff, things have been very quiet on TV lately. Or is it just the fact that I only watch Discovery&co and VH1 Classic?
Anyway, it's the first presidential election for me as well and I'm undecided as my opinion is the regardless whom we choose, the people only has to lose.

^ Because it's too much of a bureucratic hassle to start a new party, and since everyone knows how frustratingly long it can take to get a simple paper for something, nobody has enough patience to go through the whole process.

Also, for the Parliamentary elections in 3 years' time, I know what I'll be voting for...
