http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/as....ap/index.html
already a couple of days ago there was note of their plans, but now they seem to getting closer to execute it. I wonder how this will evolve, with other big nations like Canada and the US also wanting their share (in fact, the whole thing). But I don't like the fact that this increasingly vulnerable part of the world could become exploited for the recovery of other planet-up-fucking stuff, nor that the stakes for the competing countries are so high (huge amounts of gas, oil, precious metals and other expensive stuff). I wonder if this could lead to further souring of the us-russia relations and how Canada and denmark will fit in the picture. Any thoughts? |

I read an article today about it on my blackberry. The gist I got was it is a big PR stunt for Russia, who lets face it, haven't done anything interesting in thirty years. They said that the cost of getting oil from such a place outweighs the financial gain.
The question I had was they were basing their claim that it belongs to them because the ocean floor beneath the ice is a contiuation off of their continent. Couldn't the US say that half of the Atlantic is ours then too? |

About 100 scientists aboard the Akademik Fyodorov are looking for evidence that the Lomonosov Ridge -- a 1,240-mile underwater mountain range that crosses the polar region -- is a geologic extension of Russia, and therefore can be claimed by it under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea.
It seems like there is a law which allows countries to claim pieces of sea if there is some geological connection. Denmark tries to prove the same by saying that same mountian range connects to greenland. |

^I meant it to sound ridiculous.
^^Do you know of any examples where this law has been applied? |

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If the Russians take our territories on the pole, we will defend it with whale boats and catapulted captured German caravans.

Same here, however we'll probably have to resort to throwing frozen Timbits at them from fishing boats.

You need to start hunting whales. Firstly, you will get a good laugh at environmentalists, secondly, the harpoons are F*CKING BADASS!
![]() Think a former member of the Norwegian parliament, the Storting, once sunk a Greenpeace raft with a harpoon.

I know. Met him once. And some years, he's been on the Træna festival, selling whale burgers.
![]() Mate of mine put on his "Kystpartiet"-t-shirt when we had a political debate at our school at the last election, and he just said "yeah, I'm from Kystpartiet".

Yes, this guy was a representative in our parliament...![]() Anyway why do we always end up talking about whaling...? Whaling must be someting in the Norwegians national pride. I really regreted that I didn't buy that t-shirt with "We kill whales for fun" written on it...

It's because the whole world thinks we all kill whales on May 17th as a part of our national celebration of the constitution.
As we all know, the founding fathers finished the constitution, then they went to Mjøsa to hunt whales. The Big Four (Bjørnsterne Bjørnson, Henrik Ibsen, Alexander Kielland and Jonas Lie) all finished writing their shit and went whaling. And Knut Hamsun, our first modernist - perhaps only modernist - went whaling in the weekends. Hell, when King Haakon came to Norway to become king, to become more 'Norwegian', he learnt to ski and he went whaling.

Greenland? Yeah, we even tried to occupy it during the 20s. We lost in the League of Nations.
