The U.S. military received a formal request from the Iraqi government to transfer Saddam to Iraqi authorities, NBC reported on Thursday, which is one of the final steps required before his execution. His sentence, handed down last month, ordered that he be hanged within 30 days.

I think the plan was to try him for one thing at a time, and since he got death for the first one... why bother with the rest?

I´m not pro death penalty or anything (except 4 the guy that keyed my car), but thats the way things are done around there... if they just let him rot in prison a lot of iraqis are gonna be pissed....

We shall see what happens in the near future. I doubt that this will bring rest and peace to Iraq, but to be honest Saddam has to be executed for all the things he has done. So it will be a politically not so clever move, but justice has to be served.

I don't think Sadam will be viewed as a Martyr. He was an asshole, and most of the people in the region didn't like him that much. Osama being killed, yeah, that's a good argument, but I don't think that Sadam quite had that popularity.

Sadam appealed his sentencing, and the appealing court ruled to uphold his sentencing without going to trial. In the US people are on death row for 20-some years because they keep appealing and appealing and each time it's a long paper trail followed by a retrial (most of the time) that ends with similar results, then they appeal that ruling, etc. I like these Iraqi judges who seem to have some common sense, something that seems to escape the US courts sometimes...

I'm against the death penalty but this is the Iraqis business and if they wanna kill him - I won't stop them from doing it. Get it over and then back to business. I don't think there will be a large uproar.
